North Savo (also called Northern Savonia) is a beautiful region in eastern Finland. Its name in Finnish is Pohjois-Savo and in Swedish it's Norra Savolax. This region shares its borders with several other Finnish regions. These include South Savo, Central Finland, North Ostrobothnia, Kainuu, and North Karelia.

The biggest city in North Savo is Kuopio. The largest lake in the region is Lake Kallavesi. A special traditional food from North Savo is a tasty pie called Kalakukko. It's filled with fish and bacon!

Towns and Communities

North Savo has 19 different communities, which are called municipalities. Five of these are larger cities or towns. These are marked in bold below.

The region is also divided into five smaller areas called sub-regions. These are the Kuopio sub-region, Inner Savonia, North Eastern Savonia, Upper Savonia, and Varkaus sub-region.

How Politics Work in North Savo

Like other regions, North Savo has its own political landscape. People vote for different political parties to represent them. Here are the results from the 2019 Finnish parliamentary election in North Savo, showing which parties people voted for:

  • Centre Party received 21.67% of the votes.
  • The Finns Party got 17.55% of the votes.
  • The National Coalition Party received 14.80% of the votes.
  • The Social Democratic Party got 14.57% of the votes.
  • The Green League received 9.46% of the votes.
  • The Christian Democrats got 8.61% of the votes.
  • The Left Alliance received 8.44% of the votes.
  • Movement Now got 1.93% of the votes.
  • Blue Reform received 1.62% of the votes.
  • Seven Star Movement got 0.44% of the votes.
  • Other parties together received 0.91% of the votes.

Higher Education Opportunities

North Savo is home to several places where students can continue their education after high school. These are called tertiary education institutions.

  • The University of Eastern Finland has a campus in Kuopio. About 6,000 students attend classes here.
  • Savonia University of Applied Sciences also has around 6,000 students. Its main campus is in Kuopio, with other locations in Varkaus and Iisalmi.
  • The Kuopio department of Sibelius Academy focuses on music. Around 150 students study to become Master of Music in Church music or to get a Master of Arts in Arts Management.
  • The Kuopio department of Humak University of Applied Sciences teaches about 100 students. They learn to become Sign language Interpreters.
