Ostrea is a group of amazing oysters that live in the ocean! These are sea-dwelling bivalve mollusks. Think of them as a type of shellfish with two shells, just like clams. Many Ostrea oysters are famous for being delicious to eat. They belong to the family called Ostreidae, which is the main oyster family.

Ancient History of Ostrea Oysters
Ostrea oysters have been around for a super long time! We know this because their fossil records show they lived from the Permian period all the way to today. That's a huge age range, from about 259 million years ago until now! You can find fossil shells of these ancient sea creatures all over the world. There are about 150 types of Ostrea that are now extinct, meaning they no longer exist.
Ostrea Oysters in Human History
At least one type of Ostrea oyster, called Ostrea lurida, was an important food source for people long ago. Scientists have found their shells at old archaeological sites along the coast of Central California in the Pacific Ocean. This shows that the Native American Chumash people ate these oysters as part of their diet.
