The Philippine narrowmouth toad is also known as the truncate-toed chorus frog. Its scientific name is Kaloula conjuncta. This amazing creature is a type of frog from the Microhylidae family.
It is found only in the Philippines, which means it is endemic to these islands. These toads live in many different places. They can be found in dry and wet forests. They also live in shrublands and grasslands that get wet sometimes.
You might spot them near rivers, lakes, and marshes. They can even live in places where people farm, like arable land and plantations. Sadly, their homes are shrinking because of habitat loss.
Where These Toads Live
The Kaloula conjuncta lives all over the Philippines. Scientists have seen them on many islands. These include Negros, Panay, and Guimaras.
They also live on Cebu, Luzon, and Polillo. Other islands where they are found are Marinduque, Mindanao, and Leyte. Some smaller islands like Patnanungan, Jomalig, and Catanduanes are also home to them.
You can find them on Tablas, Romblon, and Sibuyan. It is possible they live on Mindoro too.
Different Kinds of Philippine Toads
There are four main types, or subspecies, of K. conjuncta. These different types were first described in 1954. Scientists have also noticed other unique groups.
For example, there are special varieties in Sibuyan, Eastern Visayas (Samar-Leyte), and Mindoro. The Sibuyan type is very similar to K. conjuncta negrosensis.
Here are the four recognized subspecies:
- K. conjuncta conjuncta: This type lives on the island of Luzon.
- K. conjuncta negrosensis: This type is found in the Visayas region.
- K. conjuncta meridionalis: This small type lives on Mindanao. It has wide, flat toes that help it climb.
- K. conjuncta stickeli: This type is from Samar. It might be a mix of K. picta and K. conjuncta meridionalis.
