What Happens in the Episode?
A Power-Draining Disaster
The story begins with Phineas, Ferb, and their friends having fun surfing on an asteroid belt in outer space. At the same time, Agent P is battling his enemy, Dr. Doofenshmirtz. Doofenshmirtz has a new invention called the "Power-Draininator."
Before Agent P can stop it, the Power-Draininator accidentally fires a beam. This beam bounces off the kids' space station and hits four powerful Marvel superheroes: Iron Man, Spider-Man, Hulk, and Thor. They are fighting against their enemies, Red Skull, Whiplash, Venom, and M.O.D.O.K. in New York City. The beam drains all the heroes' special powers, letting the villains get away!
Heroes Need Help
Nick Fury, the leader of S.H.I.E.L.D., finds out the beam came from Phineas and Ferb's space station. The powerless heroes go to the boys' house to ask them about it. Phineas and Ferb explain they didn't mean for it to happen.
Meanwhile, the Marvel villains discover that Doofenshmirtz's machine took away the heroes' powers. They visit him, thinking he's a super evil genius. But they soon realize Doofenshmirtz is not very evil at all. He just wants to do silly things like stomp on leaves. The villains then decide to attack the Googolplex Mall to make the heroes come to them.
Mixed-Up Powers and a New Plan
Phineas, Ferb, and their friends want to help the heroes get their powers back. They build a secret base called the "Secret Hideout for Emergency Defense" (S.H.E.D.). Inside the S.H.E.D., they create a machine to temporarily give the heroes their powers back.
However, Candace accidentally messes with the machine. This causes the heroes' powers to get all mixed up! Thor gets Spider-Man's powers, Spider-Man gets Hulk's powers, Iron Man gets Thor's powers, and Hulk gets Iron Man's powers.
The heroes, along with Phineas and Ferb in their special Beak suit, go to the mall to fight the villains. But with their mixed-up powers, they are quickly defeated. Luckily, Agent P, wearing a superhero costume, rescues them. Back at the S.H.E.D., Candace interferes again, and Baljeet accidentally gets hit by a gamma ray. He turns into a Hulk-like version of himself and storms off. Phineas gets upset with Candace and takes away her S.H.E.D. card.
Saving the World
Candace and Isabella feel bad because they can't seem to help much. Meanwhile, Doofenshmirtz builds an even better Power-Draininator. The Marvel villains betray Doofenshmirtz, planning to use his new device to destroy the Tri-State Area. They also want to drain the powers from every other superhero in the world and take over!
The villains lock up Doofenshmirtz and Agent P. They start changing the device to drain living energy too. Even without their original powers, the heroes go to confront the villains. Agent P frees himself and Doofenshmirtz, who wants revenge for being betrayed.
Candace and Isabella go to outer space and find the heroes' original powers stored in a tank on the space station. They bring the station back to Danville and restore the heroes' powers! With their powers back, the heroes easily defeat the villains. Phineas and Candace make up. Nick Fury thanks the kids for their help. Candace tries to tell her mom about the crashed space station, but Doofenshmirtz's Disintegrator-inator accidentally makes the station disappear, leaving no proof.
Making the Episode
A Big Crossover Idea
In 2009, The Walt Disney Company bought Marvel Entertainment. This special episode was the very first time characters from Disney and Marvel cartoons crossed over. Gary Marsh, a top executive at Disney Channels, was very excited about it. He said it was the "best year EVER!"
The episode was officially announced at a big event called Comic-Con. Dan Buckley from Marvel said it was "a ton of fun for fans of both properties."
Working Together
The creators of Phineas and Ferb, Jeff "Swampy" Marsh and Dan Povenmire, worked closely with Marvel writers. They wanted to make sure the characters acted like themselves. For example, they originally had a scene where Iron Man used Thor's hammer. But the Marvel writers said no, because only certain characters can lift Thor's hammer! So, the scene had to be changed.
Voice Actors You Know
Many of the voice actors from other Marvel shows like Ultimate Spider-Man and Avengers Assemble returned for this special. These included Drake Bell as Spider-Man, Adrian Pasdar as Iron Man, Travis Willingham as Thor, and Fred Tatasciore as Hulk. Even Stan Lee, a famous creator of Marvel Comics, made a special appearance as a hot dog vendor!
How Many People Watched?
Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel was very popular! About 3.8 million people watched it when it first aired in the United States. This was the highest number of viewers for the show in six months. It was the most-watched TV show for young people that night.
