Pieter Bruegel the Elder (born around 1525, died September 9, 1569) was a famous Dutch or Flemish artist. He lived during the Renaissance period. He was known for his amazing paintings and prints.
Many people called him 'Peasant Bruegel'. This helped tell him apart from other artists in his family. But he is the most famous Bruegel, so usually when someone says "Bruegel," they mean him! After 1559, he changed his name slightly. He dropped the 'h' and signed his artworks as Bruegel.

His Early Life
Pieter Bruegel was born around 1525. We know he was born in a place called Breda. However, it's not totally clear if this was the town of Breda in the Netherlands or a town called Bree in Belgium. Bree was also known as Breda in Latin.
He was the son of a farmer. His family lived in a small village called Breughel.
His Unique Art Style
In his later years, Bruegel painted in a simpler way. This was different from the fancy Italian art popular at the time. His art was greatly influenced by an older Dutch artist named Hieronymus Bosch. Bosch was known for his detailed and sometimes strange paintings.
What Bruegel Loved to Paint
Bruegel mostly painted scenes of nature. He often filled these scenes with peasants, who were everyday people like farmers. Many people say he was one of the first artists in the Western world to paint landscapes just because they were beautiful. Before him, landscapes were often just backgrounds for other subjects.
He loved to show the daily life in villages. His paintings often feature things like farming, hunting, meals, festivals, dances, and games. These artworks give us a peek into the culture and traditions of the 16th century.
