Economy and Jobs in Powell

Carillon with fall foliage
Carillon with fall foliage, October 2003

Powell started as a place for cattle ranching. Later, oil was discovered, which led to the CB&Q Railroad extending its tracks to Powell. In the early 1900s, new laws helped people get land for farming. This greatly helped farming grow in the Bighorn Basin area.

Today, getting minerals from the ground and farming are still the main industries in Powell. Farmers often grow sugar beets, barley, and pinto beans. Raising beef cattle is also a very important part of Powell's economy.

When the local department store in Powell closed, the community worked together. They raised $400,000 and opened the Powell Mercantile. This is a special store owned by the community itself.
