Remsen is a small town in Oneida County, New York, United States. In 2010, about 1,929 people lived there. The town is named after Henry Remsen, who was an early settler.
The Town of Remsen also contains a village that is called Remsen. You can find the town north of the city of Utica.

History of Remsen
Remsen was named after Henry Remsen II. He was the first owner of the land where the town now stands. This land was part of a large area granted in 1766. Henry Remsen was a merchant from New York City. His family were some of the first Dutch settlers in New Amsterdam.
Early Settlers and Welsh Influence
The first people settled in Remsen around 1792. Barnabas Mitchell from Meriden, Connecticut was one of the first. He started clearing land for a farm. Soon, other families from New England joined him.
In 1795, five families from Wales moved to the area. This was the start of a strong Welsh community in Remsen.
Town Formation and Changes
The Town of Remsen was officially created in 1798. It was formed from a part of the Town of Norway. This happened when Oneida County was first established. Later, in 1869, a part of Remsen was used to create the new Town of Forestport.
Geography of Remsen
Remsen covers about 36.9 square miles (95.6 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 35.4 square miles (91.7 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 1.5 square miles (3.9 square kilometers), is water.
Natural Features
The eastern border of Remsen is shared with Herkimer County. The Black River flows through the town. A dam on the river creates Kayuta Lake, which is in the northern part of Remsen. The town is also located right next to the Adirondack Park.

Notable People from Remsen
Erin Hamlin: Olympic Luger
Erin Hamlin is a famous athlete from Remsen. She was the first American woman to win a luge World Championship title in 2009. She also won a bronze medal in luge at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. This was the first Olympic medal for an American in luge singles.
Baron von Steuben: Revolutionary War Hero
Major General Baron von Steuben is buried in Remsen. His burial site is at the Steuben Memorial State Historic Site. This site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
Education in Remsen
Most students in Remsen attend schools in the Remsen Central School District. Timothy Jenny is the Superintendent of the district.
Remsen Schools
The district includes two schools:
- Remsen Elementary School (for grades Pre-Kindergarten to 6th)
- Remsen Junior-Senior High School (for grades 7th to 12th)
In 2018, Remsen Elementary had 244 students. Remsen Junior-Senior High had 205 students. The school mascot is the Remsen Rams, and the school colors are black and orange.
Athletics
Remsen Junior-Senior High School has many sports teams. They compete in Class D of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association. Sports offered include:

- Ninety Five Hill – A hill west-northwest of Ninety-six Corners.
- Ninety-six Corners – A small village on Route 365 near the eastern town line.
- Remsen – This is the main Village of Remsen, located in the southwestern part of the town.
