History of Roxbury
Roxbury was first known as Township No. 7. People started settling here around 1809. It officially became a town on March 17, 1835. The town was named after Roxbury, Massachusetts.
Early Life and Industries
Early settlers in Roxbury were mostly farmers. They grew hay and raised livestock like cows and sheep. Roxbury is located in a flat area surrounded by the Western Maine Mountains. In the 1800s, it was known for its many forests and mineral deposits.
The Swift River had waterfalls that provided water power. This power was used to run different watermills. These included sawmills for cutting wood, gristmills for grinding grain, and mills for making shingles. There was even a shoe factory.
Growth and Transportation
In 1837, Roxbury had 182 residents. By 1859, the population grew to 246 people. A railroad, the Rumford Falls & Rangeley Lakes Railroad, was finished in 1896. This train carried freight (goods), tourists, and "rusticators" (people who enjoyed nature) through Roxbury. It traveled up the Swift River valley to Mooselookmeguntic Lake.
