History of Saddle Brook
Long ago, before Europeans arrived, the Lenape Native Americans lived in this area.
Saddle River Township was formed on March 20, 1716. It covered all the land in Bergen County west of the Saddle River. This makes it one of the oldest towns in Bergen County. The township was named after the Saddle River. This river is a branch of the Passaic River. The river itself was named after a stream and valley in Scotland.
In 1772, the township was divided by a royal order. The northern part became Franklin Township. Later, other parts of the original township also became new towns. These included Glen Rock, Lodi, and Wallington. More towns like Garfield and Fair Lawn also formed from parts of the township.
On November 8, 1955, Saddle River Township changed its name. It became known as Saddle Brook, which is its name today.
