Saddleback Mountain is a cool mountain found in Essex County, New York. It's part of a famous group of mountains called the Great Range in the Adirondack Mountains. This mountain gets its name because its top ridge looks like a saddle – it has two high points with a dip in the middle.

Saddleback Mountain is surrounded by other tall peaks. To its southwest, you'll find Basin Mountain, and to its east is Gothics.

About Saddleback Mountain

Saddleback Mountain is a pretty tall peak, standing at 1,380 metres (4,528 ft) high. It's one of the well-known Adirondack High Peaks, which are 46 mountains in New York that are over 4,000 feet (about 1,219 meters) tall. Climbing all of them is a big challenge for hikers!

Where is it?

This mountain is located inside the High Peaks Wilderness Area. This area is a special part of Adirondack State Park, which is the largest state park in the United States. It's a protected place where nature can thrive.

Water Flow

The water that falls on Saddleback Mountain eventually flows into the East Branch of the Ausable River. This river then empties into Lake Champlain. From there, the water travels north into Canada's Richelieu River, then into the mighty Saint Lawrence River, and finally reaches the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the Atlantic Ocean.

  • Water from the southeast and southwest sides of Saddleback Mountain flows into a stream called Shanty Brook. This brook joins the East Branch of the Ausable River between two lakes, Upper and Lower Ausable Lake.
  • The northwest part of the mountain drains into Chicken Coop Brook, which then flows into Johns Brook and eventually the East Branch.
  • Water from the northeast side of Saddleback Mountain goes into Ore Bed Brook, which also joins Johns Brook.
