Salma Rachid (Arabic: سلمى رشيد) is a talented Moroccan pop singer and actress. She became famous at just 18 years old. This happened after she joined the TV show Arab Idol in its second season. The show was shown on MBC. Salma was the youngest person competing. She finished in fifth place. People praised her strong voice, her ability to sing in many styles, and her charming personality. Her fans even called her El Sultana, which means "The Sultaness". She looks up to the legendary singer Umm Kulthum as a big inspiration.

Her Early Life

Salma's family comes from the oasis of Tafilalt. This is a region in the southeast of Morocco. Salma was born and grew up in the Hay Mohammedi area. This is in the Ain Sebaa-Hay Mohammedi district of Casablanca, Morocco.

From a very young age, Salma loved music, drawing, and fashion. She once told MBC in an interview that she used to take clothes from her family. She would then tear them apart and sew them back together. This helped her create new outfits. She also shared a sad story. When she was younger, she almost got hit by a car. But her best friend saved her life, losing their own life instead. Salma finished high school in June 2012. She earned her baccalauréat diploma. After that, she went to university to study economics.

Becoming an Arab Idol

When Salma was 18, she decided to try out for the second season of Arab Idol.

Audition Journey

The auditions for the show in Morocco took place in Casablanca. Salma sang "Ya Moniyati" for the judges. This is a Yemeni song that is very popular in the Persian Gulf region. The judges were famous Arab singers Ragheb Alama, Ahlam, Nancy Ajram, and Egyptian producer Hassan El Shafei. All the judges accepted Salma. She then flew to Beirut, Lebanon, to continue the try-out process.

In Beirut, she sang "El Ward Gamil" by Umm Kulthum with five other contestants. Then, she performed "Awal Marra" by Abdelhalim Hafez. She was chosen as one of the 27 finalists. These finalists would compete to reach the final stage of the show.

Live Show Performances

During the first live show, Salma sang "Zaman El Samt" by Talal Maddah. The judges liked her beautiful and powerful voice. However, they felt her performance was a bit too strong. Ahlam said that if Salma focused more, she would become a huge new music star in the Arab world. Sadly, Salma did not get enough votes from the public. She was one of eight contestants chosen by the judges to perform again. This was to win one of four "wildcard" spots. Ragheb Alama picked her. She sang "Ya Msaharni" by Umm Kulthum to stay in the competition. She was saved along with Bahraini contestant Hanane Reda. This allowed her to become one of the thirteen finalists.

Salma sang many different songs during the competition. She performed songs by classic singers like Sabah, Umm Kulthum, and Mayada El Henawi. She also sang folk songs by Fouad Ghazi and Arabic pop songs by Samira Said or Sherine. Even though she didn't get many votes at first, Salma usually stayed safe. This was thanks to her growing number of fans. The judges and audience cheered for her every Friday. Even Egyptian superstar Mohammed Mounir told her, "You have something rare in the Arab world: a great voice with huge charisma." Many people from the Arab music world contacted her. They praised her voice. These included Syrian singer Rouwaida Attieh and Lebanese songwriter Salim Assaf. Assaf, who wrote songs for top singers, told her he would write a song for her. Many people from the Moroccan music scene also praised her.

On the seventh live show, she sang Ahlam's hit song "Nawaylak Ala Niya". Then, she sang the folk song "Bayn El Assr wa El Maghreb" with Lebanese pop singer Diana Haddad. This was part of a medley honoring Bedouin music star Samira Tawfik. She also performed the famous song "Mistaniyak" by Moroccan diva Aziza Jalal with the two other female contestants.

On June 8, 2013, Salma was voted off the show. She left with Kurdish contestant Parwas Hussein. Salma finished in 5th place. Even though she didn't win, the judges praised her. They said she was the biggest surprise of that season. They also called her a rare voice. According to judge Hassan El Shafei's Twitter, Salma signed a ten-year contract. This was with Platinum Records, a music label connected to MBC. It is led by Saudi superstar Rashed Al-Majed. Salma toured with Ragheb Alama in all his concerts. She was also chosen with Mohammed Assaf from Palestine, Ahmad Gamal from Egypt, and Farah Youssef from Syria. They all toured throughout the Arab world.
