Around the year 2000, his trainer, Shawn Tompkins, encouraged him to try Kickboxing. This is where Sam found his passion for combat sports. Before becoming a mixed martial artist, he had a good career in professional kickboxing. He won 16 fights and only lost 4. In June 2011, Sam got his first knockout win in the UFC. He knocked out Yves Edwards with a powerful punch. This earned him the "Knockout of the Night" award.
