Sardinia is a small town located in Erie County, New York, United States. It sits in the southeast part of Erie County and is known as one of the county's "Southtowns". Sardinia is southeast of the city of Buffalo. In 2010, about 2,775 people lived here. The town is thought to be named after an old Christian song called Sardinia, and also after the island of Sardinia in the Mediterranean Sea.

History of Sardinia

The area that is now the town of Sardinia was first settled around 1809. George Richmond from Vermont and Ezra Nott are believed to be the very first settlers. By 1810, about fifteen other families had moved into the area. Most of them lived near Cattaraugus Creek, close to Genesee and Savage roads.

Founding the Town

The town of Sardinia was officially created in 1821. It was formed from the eastern part of the town of Concord. By 1823, the town had grown quite a bit. There were farms, churches, a post office, and places to eat and drink. There were also factories like a carding mill (for wool), a woolen factory, a gristmill (for grinding grain), and a tannery (for making leather).

Historic Buildings in Sardinia

Sardinia is home to 38 historic buildings. Two important ones are the Old Sardinia Town Hall and the Rider-Hopkins Farm and Olmsted Camp. The Old Sardinia Town Hall used to be the First Baptist Church of Sardinia and now houses the local historical society. Both of these sites are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which means they are recognized for their historical importance.

Schools in Sardinia

Most students in Sardinia go to schools in the Pioneer Central School District. Some students, however, attend schools in the Holland School District or the Springville GI District.

Geography of Sardinia

The town of Sardinia covers a total area of about 130.6 square kilometers (50.4 square miles). Most of this area, about 130.0 square kilometers (50.2 square miles), is land. Only a small part, about 0.6 square kilometers (0.2 square miles), is water.

The southern border of the town is defined by Cattaraugus Creek. This creek also forms the border with Cattaraugus County and the town of Yorkshire. The eastern border of Sardinia is shared with Wyoming County and the town of Arcade. The East Branch of Cazenovia Creek starts in Sardinia and flows north.

Major roads that cross the town include New York State Route 39, which runs from west to east, and New York State Route 16, which goes from north to south.

Waterways in Sardinia

Sardinia is located where three different watersheds meet. A watershed is an area of land where all the water drains into a common river or lake. These watersheds are the Cazenovia Creek-Buffalo River watershed, the Buffalo Creek watershed, and the Cattaraugus Creek watershed.

About 645 acres (2.6 square kilometers) of land in Sardinia are protected wetlands. These are regulated by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC). Most of these wetlands are in the eastern part of the town. The most important waterway in Sardinia is Cattaraugus Creek. This creek flows southwest and eventually reaches Lake Erie. Other important streams in the town include Hosmer Brook, Dresser Creek, Otis Creek, and Richmond Gulf.
