History of Sardinia
The area that is now the town of Sardinia was first settled around 1809. George Richmond from Vermont and Ezra Nott are believed to be the very first settlers. Founding the Town
The town of Sardinia was officially created in 1821. It was formed from the eastern part of the town of Concord. By 1823, the town had grown quite a bit. There were farms, churches, a post office, and places to eat and drink. There were also factories like a carding mill (for wool), a woolen factory, a gristmill (for grinding grain), and a tannery (for making leather).

Geography of Sardinia
The town of Sardinia covers a total area of about 130.6 square kilometers (50.4 square miles). Most of this area, about 130.0 square kilometers (50.2 square miles), is land. Only a small part, about 0.6 square kilometers (0.2 square miles), is water.
The southern border of the town is defined by Cattaraugus Creek. This creek also forms the border with Cattaraugus County and the town of Yorkshire. The eastern border of Sardinia is shared with Wyoming County and the town of Arcade. The East Branch of Cazenovia Creek starts in Sardinia and flows north.

Sardinia is located where three different watersheds meet. A watershed is an area of land where all the water drains into a common river or lake. These watersheds are the Cazenovia Creek-Buffalo River watershed, the Buffalo Creek watershed, and the Cattaraugus Creek watershed.
About 645 acres (2.6 square kilometers) of land in Sardinia are protected wetlands. These are regulated by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC). Most of these wetlands are in the eastern part of the town. The most important waterway in Sardinia is Cattaraugus Creek. This creek flows southwest and eventually reaches Lake Erie. Other important streams in the town include Hosmer Brook, Dresser Creek, Otis Creek, and Richmond Gulf.
