Seminole County is a county found in the southwestern part of Georgia. It is named after the Seminole tribe of Native Americans. The county seat, which is the main town where the county government is located, is Donalsonville. In 2020, about 9,147 people lived in Seminole County.

History of Seminole County

Seminole County was officially created on November 2, 1920. The idea to form the county was first suggested on July 8, 1920. Land for the new county came from parts of two older counties: Decatur and Early.

The county is named after the Seminole tribe of Native Americans. This tribe once lived near the Chattahoochee River in this area. Later, they were moved to the Florida Everglades. There's a story that the famous Seminole chief, Osceola, was born in what is now Seminole County.

Geography of Seminole County

Seminole County covers a total area of 257 square miles. Most of this area, 235 square miles, is land. The remaining 21 square miles, or about 8.3%, is water.

Most of Seminole County is located in the Spring Creek area. This area is part of a larger river system called the ACF River Basin. The county's western border, which touches Florida, is along the Lower Chattahoochee River. A small part of the southeastern corner, which includes part of Lake Seminole, is in the Lower Flint River area. Seminole County is special because it is the only county in Georgia that shares a border with both Alabama and Florida.
