Sergeant Man is a cool mountain, or "fell," in the English Lake District. It's actually a smaller part of a bigger mountain called High Raise. But a famous walker named Alfred Wainwright thought it was so special and challenging that he gave it its own section in his guidebooks! Its pointy, rocky top looks very different from High Raise's smooth, grassy dome.

Discovering Sergeant Man's Landscape

Sergeant Man is about half a kilometer southeast of High Raise. It's a key spot where many ridges spread out like arms towards the east. You can't see Sergeant Man from the very top of High Raise. It only comes into view as you walk down from High Raise.

Valleys and Waterways

To the southeast, a wide path goes between two lakes, Codale Tarn and Stickle Tarn. This path leads to other fells like Blea Rigg, Silver How, and Loughrigg. Above Codale Tarn is a rocky peak called Codale Head. From here, more ridges go east to Tarn Crag and northeast to Calf Crag.

Steep slopes drop south from Sergeant Man. These lead down to the Bright Beck valley. This stream is the main water source for Stickle Tarn. All the water from this side flows into Great Langdale. East of the summit, between the Tarn Crag and Blea Rigg ridges, are Codale Tarn and the start of Easedale's streams. These streams flow towards Grasmere. North of Sergeant Man are the upper parts of Wythburndale. Its waters flow through Thirlmere and eventually reach the sea at Workington.

Climbing Sergeant Man

Many people enjoy hiking up Sergeant Man. Popular routes start from Great Langdale and go past Stickle Tarn. You can also start from Grasmere village using different paths.

Popular Hiking Paths

These paths might take you along the Blea Rigg, Tarn Crag, or Calf Crag ridges. You could also go up through Far Easedale or Easedale Tarn. The route past Easedale Tarn takes you by Belles Knott. This is a cool rock that looks like a sharp peak from below. But when you're on top, it's a flat, grassy area!

Sergeant Man's Summit Views

The area between Sergeant Man and Codale Head has many small lakes. But the very top of Sergeant Man is usually dry. The easiest way to climb the final rocky cone is from its northern side. From the summit, you get great views all around. The only part you can't see is where High Raise blocks the view.
