Discovering Shieldhall's Location and Past
Shieldhall gets its name from a large country estate that was there until the late 1800s. This area is right on the edge between Glasgow and Renfrewshire. It's also near the town of Renfrew.
Shieldhall's Neighbors and Connections
To the west of Shieldhall, you'll find Braehead. This area has many shops, fun places, and industrial sites. Linthouse and Drumoyne are to the east. However, the A739 road mostly separates Shieldhall from these places.
This road runs north to south. It connects from Junction 25 of the M8 motorway, which is Shieldhall's southern border. The road then goes under the river through the Clyde Tunnel.
The Clyde Tunnel: A River Crossing
The Clyde Tunnel opened in 1963. It allows cars to cross the river. There's also a special part of the tunnel for people walking and cycling. On the other side of the river are the areas of Thornwood and Whiteinch.
Important Places in Shieldhall
Shieldhall is home to some very important buildings. These include the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. This huge 14-story hospital replaced the older Southern General Hospital in the 2010s.
Shieldhall's Industrial Heart
The area also has a large industrial zone. It has been used a lot since the early 1900s. This is where the King George V Dock is located. It's the only commercial port still working in Glasgow.
Shieldhall also has one of the city's main waste recycling centers. This center helps the southwest part of Glasgow. There's also a sewage treatment plant here. Scottish Water owns this plant. It first opened in 1910 and was rebuilt in 1980. Shieldhall's plant is one of three in Glasgow. The others are in Dalmarnock and Daldowie.
Homes and Recreation in Shieldhall
South of the hospital, you'll find small groups of houses. These homes were built at different times in the 1900s. One interesting building is a converted art deco lightbulb factory.
There's also a small park in Shieldhall. This park is home to the local "Junior football" team, St Anthony's. They moved here in the early 2000s. Before that, this land was known as the 'Fifty Pitches'. It was a huge area with many football fields.
Getting Around Shieldhall
The closest train station to central Glasgow is Cardonald. It's on the other side of the M8 motorway. Bus services are very common in Shieldhall. This is because of the hospital.
Two bus companies operate here. McGill's runs routes towards Braehead and Paisley through Shieldhall. First Glasgow is another big bus company in the city.
Famous Faces and Fictional Places
Alexander P. W. Philip (1770-1851) was a doctor and writer. He was born and grew up in Shieldhall.
In popular TV shows, Shieldhall lends half of its name to a fictional area called Shieldinch. This is the setting for the BBC Scotland soap opera River City. The other half of the name comes from Whiteinch. The show's actual set is in Dumbarton.
