Towns Joining Together (Mergers)

Over the years, some smaller towns and villages in the Sierre district have joined together to form larger municipalities. This helps them work together more easily.

  • On January 1, 2009, several villages like Ayer, Chandolin, and Grimentz joined to create the municipality of Anniviers.
  • At the same time, Granges (VS) became part of the municipality of Sierre.
  • On January 1, 2017, Chermignon, Mollens (VS), Montana, and Randogne combined to form the new municipality of Crans-Montana.
  • Most recently, on January 1, 2021, Miège, Venthône, and Veyras joined to become the new municipality of Noble-Contrée.

How Sierre is Governed (Politics)

In Switzerland, people vote for their leaders. In the 2007 federal election, the most popular political group in Sierre was the CVP. They received about 37.4% of the votes. Other popular groups included the FDP, the SP, and the SVP.
