Six Flags Hurricane Harbor, often called Hurricane Harbor, is a group of exciting water parks. These parks are owned by Six Flags and have a fun Caribbean theme. You can find thrilling water slides, big wave pools, relaxing lazy rivers, places to eat, and shops. Each park is a bit different, offering unique adventures!

There are 16 Hurricane Harbor water parks across North America. Some were built new, while others were existing parks that joined the Hurricane Harbor family. The first Hurricane Harbor opened in 1995 next to Six Flags Magic Mountain in California. Today, that park is known as Hurricane Harbor Los Angeles. Only two Hurricane Harbor parks have closed their doors: one that was part of the former Six Flags Worlds of Adventure, and another in Maryland.

About Hurricane Harbor

How Hurricane Harbor Started

In September 1994, Six Flags shared exciting plans. They wanted to build a new water park in Valencia, California. This park would be right next to their Six Flags Magic Mountain amusement park. It opened in 1995 and was named Six Flags Hurricane Harbor.

Six Flags also bought another water park in Arlington, Texas, called Wet 'n Wild in 1995. After a few years, in 1997, this park also became a Six Flags Hurricane Harbor. This showed how much Six Flags believed in their new water park brand!

Six Flags Hurricane Harbor New England
Six Flags New England's Hurricane Harbor opened in 2003, helping the brand grow in the 2000s.

Growing the Water Park Family

From the late 1990s into the 2000s, Six Flags made the Hurricane Harbor brand much bigger. They built new water parks or changed the names of existing ones. Many of these parks were connected to their popular theme parks. For example, in 1999, Six Flags St. Louis added its own water attractions.

In 2000, two more Hurricane Harbor parks opened. One was at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson Township, New Jersey. Another opened at the recently acquired Six Flags Worlds of Adventure in Aurora, Ohio. Later, in 2003, Six Flags New England in Agawam, Massachusetts, renamed its water park to Six Flags Hurricane Harbor.

The Hurricane Harbor in Aurora, Ohio, was sold in 2004. It was later closed in 2006. Many of its rides were moved to a new water park nearby. In 2005, two more Hurricane Harbor parks opened. Six Flags America in Woodmore, Maryland, changed its water park's name to Hurricane Harbor. Also, Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Illinois, opened its own Hurricane Harbor next to the theme park.

Six Flags continued to add more water parks. In 2014, Six Flags Over Georgia in Mableton, Georgia, got its own Hurricane Harbor. Then, in 2015, Six Flags took over an older water park in Oaxtepec, Morelos, Mexico. After some updates, it reopened in 2017 as Hurricane Harbor Oaxtepec.

In the late 2010s, Six Flags also started to manage several other water parks. These included parks like Waterworld Concord (which became Hurricane Harbor Concord in 2018) and Wet 'n Wild Splashtown (which became Hurricane Harbor Splashtown in 2019). Other parks like White Water Bay in Oklahoma City and Wet 'n Wild Phoenix also joined the Hurricane Harbor family. In 2018, Six Flags also began managing Magic Waters in Cherry Valley, Illinois, renaming it Hurricane Harbor Rockford in 2020.

In 2021, the Hurricane Harbor park at Great America started operating as its own separate park, becoming Hurricane Harbor Chicago. In 2023, White Water Bay next to Six Flags Fiesta Texas was renamed Hurricane Harbor San Antonio. Sadly, Hurricane Harbor Maryland at Six Flags America closed its doors permanently on September 6, 2025.
