Disney's Snow White, or simply Snow White, is a 2025 American musical fantasy movie. It is a live-action version of Disney's famous 1937 animated film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Both movies are based on the classic fairy tale "Snow White" by the Brothers Grimm. The film was directed by Marc Webb and stars Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen.

In this new version of the story, Princess Snow White must escape from her evil stepmother, the Queen. She teams up with a group of seven magical companions and a bandit named Jonathan to reclaim her kingdom. The movie updates the classic tale to show Snow White as a brave leader.

Before its release, the film sparked many conversations. People discussed the casting of a Latina actress as Snow White, changes to the story, and the new way the Seven Dwarfs were portrayed. The lead actresses also shared different opinions on world events, which led some people to say they would not watch the movie.

The movie cost between $240 and $270 million to make, making it one of Disney's most expensive films. It is considered a box-office bomb, which means it did not earn enough money in theaters to cover its production costs.

Cast

  • Rachel Zegler as Snow White: A brave princess who wants to free her kingdom from her evil stepmother.
  • Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen: Snow White's powerful and jealous stepmother who wants to be "the fairest one of all."
  • Andrew Burnap as Jonathan: A new character who is a bandit and becomes Snow White's love interest. He is partly based on the Prince from the original film.
  • Martin Klebba as Grumpy: A grouchy member of the Seven companions.
  • Patrick Page as the voice of the Magic Mirror: A magical mirror that must always tell the truth.
  • The other companions are voiced by Jeremy Swift (Doc), George Salazar (Happy), Tituss Burgess (Bashful), Andrew Grotelueschen (Sleepy), Jason Kravits (Sneezy), and Andrew Barth Feldman (Dopey).

Production

Development and Writing

Director Marc Webb, screenwriter Erin Cressida Wilson and songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul

In 2016, Disney announced it was making a live-action version of Snow White. The writers wanted to modernize the story for today's audiences. They changed Snow White from a princess waiting for a prince into a strong hero who wants to become a fair and just leader for her people.

Because of this change, some story details were updated. The famous song "Someday My Prince Will Come" was replaced with a new song called "Waiting On A Wish," where Snow White sings about her hope to lead her kingdom well. The character of the Prince was also replaced with Jonathan, a bandit who respects Snow White and helps her fight the Queen.

Casting Choices

In June 2021, Rachel Zegler, an actress of Latina heritage, was cast as Snow White. In the original fairy tale, the character is described as having "skin as white as snow." This casting choice led to a lot of discussion online. Zegler said she was proud to play the character, noting that Snow White is a beloved figure in Spanish-speaking countries.

In November 2021, Gal Gadot was cast as the Evil Queen. She said she enjoyed playing a classic Disney villain. Andrew Burnap was cast as the new male lead, Jonathan.

A New Take on the Companions

The film also changed the portrayal of the Seven Dwarfs. In 2022, actor Peter Dinklage, who has a form of dwarfism, criticized the idea of remaking the story, saying he worried it would repeat "backward" stereotypes about people with dwarfism.

Disney listened to these concerns and worked with members of the dwarfism community. They decided to reimagine the characters. In the final film, the seven companions are magical, computer-generated (CGI) characters of different shapes and sizes. They are never called "dwarfs" in the movie. This change also caused debate, with some actors with dwarfism feeling it took away acting opportunities.

Filming and Music

Filming took place in the United Kingdom in 2022 at Pinewood Studios. A small fire broke out on set one day, but no one was hurt and it did not affect the production.

The movie features four songs from the original 1937 film, including "Heigh-Ho" and "Whistle While You Work". Songwriters Pasek and Paul (who worked on The Greatest Showman) wrote several new songs for the film. These include Snow White's new song "Waiting on a Wish" and a villain song for the Evil Queen.

Release and Reception

Marketing and Release Date

The first trailers for Snow White were released in 2024. The trailers received a mixed reaction online. Many people used the "dislike" button on YouTube to show they were unhappy with the film's visual effects and the changes to the classic story.

The movie was first set to be released in March 2024. However, it was delayed by a year, partly due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. It was finally released in theaters on March 21, 2025.

Impact on Disney

Because Snow White did not make as much money as the studio had hoped, it had an impact on other projects. In April 2025, it was reported that Disney had decided to pause production on its planned live-action remake of the movie Tangled.
