A Look Back at South Toowoomba's History

The land where South Toowoomba sits has a long history. It is part of the traditional country of the Giabal people. The Giabal are an Aboriginal language group. Their language region covers the area around Toowoomba. This includes places south to Allora and west to Millmerran.

Early Schools in South Toowoomba

Schools have been an important part of South Toowoomba for a very long time.

St Patrick's and St Saviour's Schools

St Patrick's Catholic Primary School first opened its doors in 1863. It was located at St Patrick's Catholic Church. At first, regular teachers taught there. But from 1873, the Sisters of Mercy took over running the school.

A secondary school for girls, St Patrick's Secondary School, opened in 1914. It was later renamed The Cathedral School in 1938. In 1959, both schools got new names: St Saviour's Primary School and St Saviour's Secondary School. The secondary school was later renamed St Saviour's College.

Since 1989, the secondary school has been run by lay (non-religious) staff. The primary school also came under lay management in 1994.

Toowoomba South State School's Journey

Toowoomba South State School started in 1865. Over the years, it changed its structure many times. In 1869, it split into two: a school for girls and infants, and a school for boys.

These schools merged and split again several times over the decades. Finally, in 1983, the girls' and infants' school and the boys' school joined back together. This created the Toowoomba South State School we know. The school closed on December 31, 2013.

The school's location also moved around a bit over time. It started on the corner of Ruthven Street and Lawrence Street. Later, it expanded and was located at 158 James Street when it closed.

Special Education in the Past

Special education classes, sometimes called "opportunity classes," began at Toowoomba South State School in 1923. In 1960, these classes moved to a new building. This new school became the Toowoomba Opportunity School, which is now known as Toowoomba Special School in Centenary Heights.
