Stanton is a small community in New Castle County, Delaware, United States. It's not officially a city or town, but a community without its own local government. It is located where the Red Clay and White Clay Creeks meet. This area is in the southern part of a larger region called Mill Creek Hundred.

For the 1990 U.S. Census, Stanton was counted as a specific place. This helped gather information about the people living there.

A Look Back: Stanton's History

Before European settlers arrived, Native American people often visited the area around Stanton. An ancient site, known as the Clyde Farm site, shows that Paleo-Indians (very early people in North America) lived southwest of the community.

Stanton is found near the Piedmont fall line. This is a natural boundary where harder, older rocks meet softer, younger rocks. It's also along the banks of the Red Clay Creek. The first settlers came here around 1679, making it the very first settlement in Mill Creek Hundred. Many small watermills used the power of the water in the area. A farm road from Chester County, Pennsylvania also ended right on the banks of Red Clay Creek.

The village got its name from Stephen Stanton. He was an important landowner in the community.

In August 1777, during the American Revolutionary War, George Washington built defenses in the area. He expected to face British troops who had recently landed nearby. Washington and his officers held an important meeting at the Hale-Byrnes House. However, the battle did not happen there. The British General Howe moved his army north towards Pennsylvania instead.

St. James Church was built in 1720. The first public school in the area opened near this church in 1808.

The Kiamensi Woolen Mills operated along the Red Clay Creek. They had several locations in the area. These mills made blankets and other materials for the Union Army during the American Civil War. They continued to operate until the early 1900s.

Today, two important historical places in Stanton are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These are the Hale-Byrnes House and St. James Episcopal Church.
