History of Södertälje SK
Södertälje SK was founded on February 22, 1902. At first, the club had many different sports. These included gymnastics, track and field, soccer, tug of war, and speed skating.
In 1907, a bandy section was added. Bandy is a sport similar to ice hockey. In the 1910s and 1920s, the club also did well in competitive cycling. The team started practicing ice hockey in early 1925.
SSK's Success in Swedish Hockey
Södertälje SK has played many seasons in Sweden's top ice hockey division. They were in the top division for 53 years in a row, from 1925 to 1978. This is the longest streak for any team.
The team has won the Swedish ice hockey championship seven times. Their championship years were 1925, 1931, 1941, 1944, 1953, 1956, and 1985.
Recent Seasons and League Changes
In the 2004–05 Elitserien season, Södertälje finished 8th. They then made it to the semifinals in the playoffs, which was their best result since 1989.
However, in the 2005–06 Elitserien season, they were moved down to HockeyAllsvenskan. They managed to get back into Elitserien in 2007. In the 2007–08 Elitserien season, they finished ninth and stayed in the top league.
In 2009 and 2010, the team played in Kvalserien, which is a special series to decide which teams stay in the top league. Södertälje managed to stay in Elitserien both times.
In 2011 Kvalserien, Södertälje played against Modo in the final game. The winner would stay in Elitserien, and the loser would go down to HockeyAllsvenskan. Södertälje lost the game 0–2 and was moved down to HockeyAllsvenskan. After this, Peter Popovic was replaced by Johan Strömwall as head coach.
