Södertälje Sportklubb, often called Södertälje SK or SSK, is a professional ice hockey team from Sweden. They play in HockeyAllsvenskan, which is the second-highest hockey league in Sweden. SSK has a long history in Swedish hockey. They were one of the first teams in the top league, Elitserien, when it started in 1975. Their fan club is known as Supporterklubben.

The History of Södertälje SK

Södertälje SK was started a long time ago, on February 22, 1902. When it first began, the club had many different sports. These included gymnastics, track and field athletics, soccer, tug of war, and speed skating.

In 1907, the club added a bandy section. Bandy is a sport similar to ice hockey, played with a ball. In the 1910s and 1920s, SSK also did very well in competitive cycling.

How Ice Hockey Started at SSK

The club began practicing ice hockey in early 1925. This was a big moment for SSK. They quickly became very good at the sport.

SSK has played many seasons in Sweden's top ice hockey league. They held the record for most seasons (74) until Djurgårdens IF matched it in 2015. SSK also holds the record for playing the most consecutive seasons in the top league. They played for 53 years in a row, from 1925 to 1978.

SSK's Championship Wins

Södertälje SK has won the Swedish ice hockey championship seven times! Their championship years were 1925, 1931, 1941, 1944, 1953, 1956, and 1985. This shows they have been a very successful team over the years.

The team has played a total of 24 seasons in the Swedish Hockey League. This league was known as Elitserien before it changed its name.

Recent Seasons and Promotions

In the 2004–05 Elitserien season, Södertälje finished in 8th place. They then made it to the semifinals in the playoffs, which was their best result since 1989. However, in the 2005–06 season, they were moved down to a lower league called Allsvenskan. This league is now known as HockeyAllsvenskan.

SSK worked hard and qualified for Elitserien again in 2007. In the 2007–08 season, they finished ninth. This meant they missed the playoffs but stayed in the top league for the next season.

In 2009 and 2010, the team managed to stay in Elitserien. But in 2011, things were very close. Södertälje and Modo both had 17 points before the last game. The final game decided which team would be moved down to HockeyAllsvenskan. Södertälje lost the game 0–2 and was relegated. After this, their head coach, Peter Popovic, was replaced by Johan Strömwall.
