Growing Up and School
Tate Rosner McRae was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, on July 1, 2003. Her mother, Tanja Rosner, was a dance instructor, and her father, Todd McRae, worked as a lawyer. When Tate was two years old, her family moved to Oman for three years because of her father's job. While in Oman, she attended The American International School Muscat.
Tate started taking dance classes for fun when she was six. After her family moved back to Calgary when she was eight, she began to train much more seriously in dance. She competed with Drewitz Dance Productions. From age 11, she trained in many different dance styles at YYC Dance Project, a dance company owned by her mother. She also studied ballet at the School of Alberta Ballet. Tate went to Western Canada High School and finished her studies online in 2021.

She also danced in the music video for Walk off the Earth's song "Rule the World". For the second time, Tate won the Best Female Dancer award at the 2015 Dance Awards, this time in the Junior category.

Starting Music and "You Broke Me First" (2017–2020)
Tate McRae's YouTube channel originally featured mostly dance videos. However, in 2017, she started sharing original songs she wrote and recorded in her bedroom. Her first song in this series, "One Day", quickly gained over 40 million views. This led her to release the song independently, and it later became certified gold in Canada. From 2017 to 2019, Tate continued to release independent songs, which led to her being named YouTube's Artist on the Rise. Her music caught the attention of record labels.
In August 2019, Tate signed with RCA Records. She then released singles like "Tear Myself Apart", "All My Friends Are Fake", and "Stupid". These songs were part of her first EP. "Stupid" became popular on Canadian radio. Tate released her first EP, All the Things I Never Said, on January 24, 2020. Billboard included her on their "21 Under 21 One to Watch" list. She was also the youngest person listed in the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in the music category in December 2020. Rolling Stone named her one of the top ten biggest breakthrough artists of 2020.
