Tate Rosner McRae (born July 1, 2003) is a talented Canadian singer, songwriter, and dancer. She first became well-known as the first Canadian to reach the finals on the TV show So You Think You Can Dance in 2016.
After the show, she signed with RCA Records. She released two mini-albums, called extended plays (EPs): All the Things I Never Said (2020) and Too Young to Be Sad (2021). Her second EP, Too Young to Be Sad, was the most streamed female EP on Spotify in 2021. It included the hit song "You Broke Me First", which was very popular around the world.
Tate McRae's first full album, I Used to Think I Could Fly (2022), reached number three in Canada. It featured the popular song "She's All I Wanna Be". In 2023, she released "Greedy", which became a huge worldwide hit. This song was part of her second album, Think Later (2023), which was also very successful. Her third album, So Close to What (2025), topped music charts globally. In 2025, she had her first number-one song on the Billboard Hot 100 as a featured artist on Morgan Wallen's song "What I Want".

Early Life and Dance Training
Tate Rosner McRae was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, on July 1, 2003. Her mom, Tanja Rosner, is a dance teacher, and her dad, Todd McRae, is a lawyer. Tate has family roots from Scotland and Germany.
When she was two years old, her family moved to Oman for three years because of her dad's job. While there, she went to The American International School Muscat. Tate started dancing for fun at age six. After moving back to Calgary when she was eight, she began to train much more seriously in dance. She competed with Drewitz Dance Productions. From age 11, she trained in many dance styles at YYC Dance Project, a dance company owned by her mom. She also studied ballet at the School of Alberta Ballet.
Tate went to Western Canada High School and finished her studies online in 2021.
Career Highlights
2013–2018: Dance Star
Tate McRae won "Mini Best Female Dancer" at the 2013 Dance Awards in New York City. She became a brand ambassador for the dance shoe company Capezio. She was also a finalist at the New York City Dance Alliance's 2014 National Gala. From 2013 to 2015, she voiced a character named Spot Splatter Splash for the Lalaloopsy TV show.
In 2015, Tate won a silver medal for her solo dance and a bronze medal for her duet at the Youth America Grand Prix. This earned her a two-week scholarship at the Berlin State Ballet company. She also danced in the music video for Walk off the Earth's song "Rule The World". For the second time, she won "Best Female Dancer" at the 2015 Dance Awards, this time in the Junior category.
In June 2016, she performed on stage with Justin Bieber in Calgary during his Purpose World Tour. In April 2016, Tate performed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show with a dance group called DancerPalooza. In June 2016, she joined the TV show So You Think You Can Dance. She was coached by dancer Kathryn McCormick. Tate made it further in the competition than any other Canadian dancer, finishing third in the finals. She also performed at the 2016 Teen Choice Awards.
She was featured on the cover of Dance Spirit Magazine in April 2017. In November 2017, after dancing to Demi Lovato's song "Tell Me You Love Me", Lovato invited her to rehearse with their dancers. In 2018, she won "Best Female Dancer" at the 2018 Dance Awards in Las Vegas, in the Teen category. This made her the first dancer to win in all categories from mini to teen.
2017–2020: Music Takes Off with "You Broke Me First"
Tate McRae's YouTube channel started with dance videos. But in 2017, she began sharing videos of her own songs, which she wrote and recorded in her bedroom. Her first song, "One Day", quickly got over 40 million views. This led her to release it as her first independent song. It later became certified gold in Canada.
From 2017 to 2019, Tate kept releasing her own songs and was named YouTube's Artist on the Rise. Her songs caught the attention of record labels. In August 2019, she signed with RCA Records. She then released singles like "Tear Myself Apart", "All My Friends Are Fake", and "Stupid". "Stupid" became popular on Canadian radio and was certified gold in Canada.

Tate released her first EP, All the Things I Never Said, on January 24, 2020. She then went on her "All the Things I Never Said Tour" in Europe and North America, and all the shows sold out.
In April 2020, Tate released "You Broke Me First". This song became a huge international hit, reaching the top ten in many countries like Australia and the UK. It was her first song to appear on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US. It stayed on the Billboard Hot 100 for 38 weeks, which was the longest for a female artist in 2020. She performed the song on TV shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Throughout 2020, she released other songs like "Vicious" with Lil Mosey, "Don't Be Sad", "Lie to Me" with Ali Gatie, and "R U Ok".
Tate was nominated for an MTV Video Music Award for Push Best New Artist in September 2020. She was also named YouTube's Artist on the Rise, MTV's Push Artist for July, and a Vevo DSCVR artist. Forbes 30 Under 30 included her as the youngest person on their music list in December 2020. Rolling Stone also named her one of the top ten breakthrough artists of 2020.
Her rise to fame happened mostly during the COVID-19 pandemic. This meant many of her performances were done in isolation or studios.
2021–2022: I Used to Think I Could Fly
In January 2021, Tate released "Rubberband". On March 3, 2021, she announced her second EP, Too Young to Be Sad, which came out on March 26, 2021. The EP was very popular and had over one billion streams on Spotify by the end of 2021. It was nominated for "Album of the Year" at the 2022 Juno Awards.
In April, Tate was featured on the song "You" with Regard and Troye Sivan. In May, she performed a global online show called "Too Young to Be Sad". She also signed a deal with Essentia Water and was nominated for the Social Star Award at the IHeartRadio Music Awards. She was featured on the song "U Love U" by Blackbear and released "Working" with Khalid.
"That Way", a song from her first EP, became popular again in late 2021 after going viral on TikTok. In November 2021, Tate released "Feel Like ...", the first song from her upcoming first album.
In February 2022, she released "She's All I Wanna Be", which became a top 10 hit in Canada and other countries. Tate also became a brand ambassador for Maybelline. She released "Chaotic" in March and "What Would You Do?" in May. Her debut album, I Used to Think I Could Fly, was released on May 27, 2022. It received good reviews and reached number 3 in Canada and number 13 in the US.
In September 2022, Tate released "Uh Oh". In November, she was featured on Tiësto's song "10:35". By the end of 2022, Tate started exploring a more pop-focused sound for her music.
2023–2024: Think Later Album

In September 2023, Tate released "Greedy". It became her biggest debut on Spotify and her first top 10 song on the Global Spotify Charts. The song topped charts in Canada, Denmark, Norway, Australia, and the Netherlands. It also reached number one on the Billboard Global 200, making it her first worldwide number-one single. "Greedy" also reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. It was the number one song on the US Pop Airplay chart for eight weeks in 2024.
In November, she released "Exes", which also reached the top ten in Canada. Tate released her second album, Think Later, on December 8, 2023. The album was well-received and reached the top five in many countries, including number four on the US Billboard 200. Tate won the Juno Award for Artist of the Year and Single of the Year for "Greedy" at the 2024 Juno Awards.
In late 2023, Tate performed "Greedy" and a new song called "Grave" on Saturday Night Live. She also performed "Greedy" at various award shows in 2023 and early 2024.
2024–Present: So Close to What
In September 2024, Tate released "It's OK I'm OK", which became her highest-charting debut on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 20. She followed this with "2 Hands" in November. Along with "2 Hands", Tate announced her third album, So Close to What, which was released on February 21, 2025. She also announced her "Miss Possessive Tour", which started on March 18, 2025. So Close to What became Tate's first number-one album on the Billboard 200.
Her third single, "Sports Car", was released on January 24, 2025. It reached the top ten in Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, and the UK. Tate appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on February 25, 2025, where she taught Jimmy how to do the "It's OK I'm OK" dance. She returned to the show on March 5, 2025, to perform "Revolving Door". She also performed "Sports Car" and "Dear God" on Saturday Night Live for the second time on March 1, 2025. Her "Miss Possessive Tour" began in South America in March and continued in Europe in May.
In May 2025, Tate was featured on Morgan Wallen's song "What I Want". This song debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, making it her first number-one single. Also in May, "Just Keep Watching" was released and included on the F1 soundtrack. She performed at the Capital Summertime Ball on June 15, 2025, at Wembley Stadium.
Personal Life
From late 2021 to early 2023, Tate McRae was in a relationship with Columbus Blue Jackets player Cole Sillinger. In April 2024, Australian rapper and singer the Kid Laroi confirmed he was in a relationship with Tate McRae. They worked together on the song "I Know Love" from her 2025 album So Close to What.

Tate McRae has mentioned many artists who inspire her music. Some of her biggest musical influences include Ariana Grande, Post Malone, the Weeknd, Khalid, Jessie Reyez, and Jeremy Zucker.
She looks up to Zendaya and Dua Lipa as all-around inspirations, calling them her biggest idols. For bringing dance into her performances, she is inspired by artists like Bruno Mars, Madonna, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Ciara, Jennifer Lopez, and Justin Timberlake. When it comes to songwriting, she looks to Taylor Swift, Julia Michaels, and Alec Benjamin. Tate has said she is a "huge fan" of Taylor Swift and believes she is "one of the greatest songwriters." She also admires Billie Eilish and Rosalía.

Tate McRae has been called "the teen dance star turned future pop idol" by i-D magazine and "the new teen queen" by Notion. Elle described her as "Canada's answer to Billie Eilish".
