Tate Rosner McRae (born July 1, 2003) is a talented Canadian singer, songwriter, and dancer. She first became known to many as a contestant on the American TV show So You Think You Can Dance in 2016. After signing with RCA Records, she gained early fame for her music, especially her extended plays (EPs) All the Things I Never Said (2020) and Too Young to Be Sad (2021). Her EP Too Young to Be Sad was the most streamed female EP on Spotify in 2021 and included her hit song "You Broke Me First", which was her first song to appear on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.

In 2022, Tate McRae released her first full album, I Used to Think I Could Fly. This album reached number three on the Canadian music charts and featured the popular song "She's All I Wanna Be". Her second album, Think Later (2023), had a more pop sound and included the very successful song "Greedy". "Greedy" became one of the bestselling songs around the world in 2024. In 2025, she released her third album, So Close to What, which became a number one album in the US. This album featured global top-ten hits like "Sports Car", "Revolving Door", and "Tit for Tat". In 2025, she also had her first US number-one song as a featured artist on Morgan Wallen's "What I Want". She also received her first Grammy Award nomination for the song "Just Keep Watching" from the F1 soundtrack.

Growing Up and School

Tate Rosner McRae was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, on July 1, 2003. Her mother, Tanja Rosner, was a dance instructor, and her father, Todd McRae, worked as a lawyer. When Tate was two years old, her family moved to Oman for three years because of her father's job. While in Oman, she attended The American International School Muscat.

Tate started taking dance classes for fun when she was six. After her family moved back to Calgary when she was eight, she began to train much more seriously in dance. She competed with Drewitz Dance Productions. From age 11, she trained in many different dance styles at YYC Dance Project, a dance company owned by her mother. She also studied ballet at the School of Alberta Ballet. Tate went to Western Canada High School and finished her studies online in 2021.

Her Journey to Stardom

Early Dance Career (2013–2018)

Tate McRae won the Mini Best Female Dancer award at the 2013 Dance Awards in New York City. She became well-known on social media and became a brand ambassador for Capezio, a company that makes dance shoes. In 2015, she won a silver medal as a soloist and a bronze medal for her duet at the Youth America Grand Prix. This earned her a two-week scholarship at the Berlin State Ballet company. She also danced in the music video for Walk off the Earth's song "Rule the World". For the second time, Tate won the Best Female Dancer award at the 2015 Dance Awards, this time in the Junior category.

In June 2016, she performed at Justin Bieber's concert in Calgary during his "Purpose World Tour". In April 2016, Tate performed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. In June 2016, she competed in the thirteenth season of So You Think You Can Dance. She was mentored by dancer Kathryn McCormick and finished in third place, which was the highest a Canadian had ever placed on the show. She performed at the 2016 Teen Choice Awards and again on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in October 2016.

Tate was featured on the cover of Dance Spirit magazine in April 2017. In November 2017, after dancing to Demi Lovato's song "Tell Me You Love Me", she was invited to rehearse with Lovato's dancers. For the third time, she won Best Female Dancer at the 2018 Dance Awards in Las Vegas, this time in the Teen category. This made her the first dancer in the competition's history to win in all categories from mini to teen.

Starting Music and "You Broke Me First" (2017–2020)

Tate McRae's YouTube channel originally featured mostly dance videos. However, in 2017, she started sharing original songs she wrote and recorded in her bedroom. Her first song in this series, "One Day", quickly gained over 40 million views. This led her to release the song independently, and it later became certified gold in Canada. From 2017 to 2019, Tate continued to release independent songs, which led to her being named YouTube's Artist on the Rise. Her music caught the attention of record labels.

In August 2019, Tate signed with RCA Records. She then released singles like "Tear Myself Apart", "All My Friends Are Fake", and "Stupid". These songs were part of her first EP. "Stupid" became popular on Canadian radio. Tate released her first EP, All the Things I Never Said, on January 24, 2020. She also announced her "All the Things I Never Said Tour", which sold out every show in Europe and North America.
