Tate Rosner McRae (born July 1, 2003) is a talented Canadian singer, songwriter, and dancer. She first became well-known as the first Canadian to reach the finals on the American TV show So You Think You Can Dance in 2016.
After her debut song "One Day" became popular in 2017, she signed with RCA Records. She then released two mini-albums, called extended plays (EPs): All the Things I Never Said (2020) and Too Young to Be Sad (2021). Her second EP was the most streamed female EP on Spotify in 2021. It included the hit song "You Broke Me First", which became a top ten song in Canada and reached number 17 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
In 2022, McRae released her first full album, I Used to Think I Could Fly. This album reached number 13 on the US Billboard 200 chart. The song "She's All I Wanna Be" from this album was a top ten hit in Canada. Later, McRae started making more pop-sounding songs. She released "Greedy", which became a huge worldwide success. It reached number one in Canada and number three on the Hot 100 chart. "Greedy" was part of her second album, Think Later (2023), which was a top five album in many countries.

Early Life and Dance Beginnings
Tate Rosner McRae was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, on July 1, 2003. Her father is from Scotland, and her mother is from Germany. When she was four years old, her family moved to Oman for three years because of her dad's job. While in Oman, her mother taught dance lessons.
Tate started taking dance classes for fun at age six. After returning to Calgary at age eight, she began training much more seriously in dance. She competed with Drewitz Dance Productions. From age 11, she trained in all kinds of dance at YYC Dance Project, a dance company owned by her mother. She also took ballet classes at the School of Alberta Ballet. Tate finished high school through online learning in 2022.

Dance Achievements (2013–2018)
Tate McRae won "Mini Best Female Dancer" at the 2013 Dance Awards in New York City. She became a brand ambassador for the dance company Capezio. She also lent her voice to the character Spot Splatter Splash in the Lalaloopsy TV show from 2013 to 2015.
In 2015, Tate won a silver medal as a solo dancer and a bronze medal for her duet at the Youth America Grand Prix. This earned her a two-week scholarship at the Berlin State Ballet company. She also danced in the music video for Walk off the Earth's song "Rule The World". For the second time, Tate won the "Best Female Dancer" award at the 2015 Dance Awards, this time in the Junior category.
In June 2016, she performed with Justin Bieber at his concert in Calgary during his Purpose World Tour. In April 2016, Tate performed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show with the DancerPalooza group. In June 2016, she joined the thirteenth season of So You Think You Can Dance. She was mentored by dancer Kathryn McCormick. Tate made it further than any other Canadian dancer in the show's history, finishing third in the final episode. She also performed at the 2016 Teen Choice Awards.
Tate was featured on the cover of Dance Spirit Magazine in April 2017. In November 2017, after dancing to Demi Lovato's song "Tell Me You Love Me", Lovato invited her to rehearse with their dancers. In 2018, she won "Best Female Dancer" at the 2018 Dance Awards in Las Vegas in the Teen category. This made her the first dancer ever to win in all three categories: mini, junior, and teen. In April 2018, she choreographed and danced in the music video for "Just Say When" by the band Nothing More.
Music Journey and "You Broke Me First" (2017–2020)

Tate McRae's YouTube channel started in 2011 with mostly dance videos. But in 2017, she began sharing original songs she wrote and recorded in her bedroom. The first song in this series, "One Day", quickly gained over 40 million views. This led her to release it as her first independent single. The song later became certified gold in Canada. From 2017 to 2019, Tate continued to release independent singles, and YouTube named her an "Artist on the Rise." Her songs caught the attention of record labels.
Tate signed with RCA Records in August 2019. She then released singles like "Tear Myself Apart", "All My Friends Are Fake", and "Stupid". These songs were the first from her upcoming debut EP. "Stupid" became popular on Canadian radio and was certified gold in Canada. Tate released her first EP, All the Things I Never Said, on January 24, 2020. She also announced her "All the Things I Never Said Tour" in Europe and North America, and every show sold out.
In April 2020, Tate released "You Broke Me First". This song became a huge international hit, reaching the top ten in many countries. It was her first song to appear on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US. It stayed on the chart for 38 weeks, which was the longest for a female artist in 2020. She performed the song on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Later that year, she signed a worldwide music publishing deal with Sony/ATV.
Throughout 2020, Tate released more singles, including "Vicious" with rapper Lil Mosey, "Don't Be Sad", "Lie to Me" with Ali Gatie, and "R U Ok".
In September, Tate was nominated for an MTV Video Music Award for Push Best New Artist. She performed "You Broke Me First" at the VMAs pre-show. She was recognized as a rising artist by YouTube, MTV, and Vevo. Billboard named her one of their "21 Under 21 One to Watch" artists. In December 2020, she was the youngest person on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list for music. Rolling Stone also named her one of the top ten breakthrough artists of 2020.
I Used to Think I Could Fly (2021–2022)
"She's All I Wanna Be" was released on February 4, 2022, as the second song from her first album. It reached the top 10 in Canada, Ireland, Norway, Singapore, and Belgium. It also charted in the top 40 in many other countries. In February 2022, Tate became a brand ambassador for Maybelline makeup.
Tate released "Chaotic" on March 25, 2022, and "What Would You Do?" on May 13, 2022. Her album, I Used to Think I Could Fly, was released on May 27, 2022. In September 2022, she released the single "uh oh". In November 2022, Tate was featured on the song "10:35" by Tiësto. This song became a top 10 hit in the UK and ten other countries.
Think Later and So Close to What (2023–Present)
In August 2023, Tate McRae started hinting at new music. On September 15, 2023, she released "Greedy". This song had her biggest debut on Spotify and became her first top 10 song on the Global Spotify Charts. It reached number one in several countries, including Canada, and on the Billboard Global 200 chart. It also became her first song to reach the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US, peaking at number 3. "Greedy" was a huge success and was the first single from her second album. In November, she released another single called "Exes", which also reached the top ten in Canada.
Tate McRae released her second album, Think Later, on December 8, 2023. The album was praised and seen as a big step in her career. It debuted in the top five charts worldwide, including number four on the US Billboard 200. Tate won the Juno Award for Artist of the Year and Single of the Year for "Greedy" at the 2024 Juno Awards.
In late 2023, Tate made her Saturday Night Live debut, performing "Greedy" and a new song called "Grave." She continued to perform "Greedy" at various awards shows in 2023 and early 2024.
In September 2024, Tate released the single "It's OK I'm OK", which charted well worldwide and became her highest-charting debut on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 20. She followed this with "2 Hands" in November. Along with "2 Hands", Tate announced her third album, So Close to What, set for release on February 21, 2025. Personal Life
Tate McRae is a big fan of the Calgary Flames, an NHL team. She often attends their games. Her brother, Tucker, plays hockey for Dartmouth.
From late 2021 to early 2023, Tate was in a relationship with Columbus Blue Jackets player Cole Sillinger. In April 2024, Australian rapper and singer The Kid Laroi confirmed he was in a relationship with Tate McRae.
Musical Style and Influences
Tate McRae has said that Post Malone, the Weeknd, Khalid, Jessie Reyez, Ariana Grande, and Jeremy Zucker are her biggest musical influences. She looks up to Zendaya and Dua Lipa as overall inspirations.
She also mentioned Bruno Mars, Madonna, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Ciara, Jennifer Lopez, and Justin Timberlake as people who inspire her to include dance in her performances. For songwriting, she looks up to Taylor Swift, Julia Michaels, and Alec Benjamin. Tate has called herself a "huge fan" of Taylor Swift, describing her as "one of the greatest songwriters." She also admires Billie Eilish and Rosalía.
