Starting Out as an Amateur
Teddy Purcell moved to the United States to go to Lake Forest Academy. This was a special school north of Chicago where he also played hockey. After that, he played junior hockey for the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. This team was part of the United States Hockey League (USHL).
He became the RoughRiders' all-time top scorer. He earned 138 points, with 39 goals and 99 assists, in two seasons. In his first year, he led his team in scoring with 67 points. Even though he was good, no NHL team picked him in the draft. After junior hockey, he played one year of college hockey at the University of Maine. He played for their team, the Black Bears, in the 2006–07 season.
Playing as a Professional
In the 2007–08 season, Teddy started his professional career. He spent most of the year playing in the American Hockey League (AHL) for the Manchester Monarchs. He also played ten games in the NHL with the Los Angeles Kings. On February 15, 2008, Teddy scored his very first NHL goal. It was against Miikka Kiprusoff of the Calgary Flames at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
In the AHL, he was chosen for the 2008 AHL All-Star Classic game. He was the first new player to score three goals in one game, which is called a hat-trick. He also scored the winning goal in a shootout. This helped the Canadian All-Stars win 9–8 against the PlanetUSA All-Stars. Teddy was named the game's Most Valuable Player (MVP). He finished his first AHL season with 83 points in 67 games. He also won the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award as the best new player in the AHL. In the 2008–09 season, Teddy played for both the Monarchs and the Kings. He played 40 games in the NHL, scoring 4 goals and 12 assists for 16 points.
In 2010, Teddy was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning. He finished the 2009–10 season with 15 points. In 2011, Teddy scored his first NHL hat trick against the Phoenix Coyotes. He ended that season with 51 points. He also scored 17 points in 18 games during the 2011 Stanley Cup playoffs.
In 2012, Teddy scored his second NHL hat trick. This helped Tampa Bay win a game 4–3 in overtime. After a great season where he scored 24 goals and 65 points, Teddy was chosen to play for Canada. He played in the 2012 IIHF World Championship.
On June 29, 2014, Teddy was traded to the Edmonton Oilers. In 2016, he was traded again to the Florida Panthers. This happened because his team was not going to make it to the Stanley Cup playoffs.
On July 1, 2016, Teddy became a free agent, meaning he could sign with any team. He decided to go back to his first team, the Los Angeles Kings. However, his return was not very successful. He only had 2 assists in 12 games. He was then sent to the Kings' AHL team, the Ontario Reign. He played well there, getting 38 points in 38 games.
In 2017, Teddy tried out for the Boston Bruins but did not get a contract. He later played for Avangard Omsk in the KHL before ending his career in 2018.
