Edward "Teddy" Purcell (born September 8, 1985) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. He played as a right winger in the National Hockey League (NHL) for several teams, including the Los Angeles Kings, Tampa Bay Lightning, Edmonton Oilers, and Florida Panthers. He was never chosen by an NHL team in the annual draft, which is quite rare for a player who made it to the NHL! Today, Purcell works as a scout for the Montreal Canadiens, helping them find new talent.

Teddy Purcell's Hockey Journey
Starting Out: Amateur Hockey
Teddy Purcell's hockey journey began when he moved to the United States. He went to Lake Forest Academy, a special school near Chicago, where he played hockey.
After that, he played junior hockey for the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in the United States Hockey League (USHL). He was really good, setting a team record for points scored with 138 points (39 goals and 99 assists) in two seasons. He was the top scorer for his team in his first year!
Even though he was a great player, no NHL team picked him in the draft. So, he went on to play college hockey for one season at the University of Maine with the Black Bears ice hockey team in 2006–07.
Becoming a Pro Player
In 2007–08, Teddy Purcell started his professional career. He spent most of that year playing in the American Hockey League (AHL) for the Manchester Monarchs. He also got to play ten games in the NHL with the Los Angeles Kings. On February 15, 2008, he scored his very first NHL goal against the Calgary Flames.
In the AHL, he was chosen for the 2008 AHL All-Star Classic. He made history by being the first rookie to score three goals (a hat-trick) in that game! He even scored the winning goal in a shootout, helping the Canadian All-Stars win. Because of his amazing performance, Purcell was named the game's Most Valuable Player (MVP). He finished his first AHL season with 83 points in 67 games and won the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award as the best rookie in the AHL.
In the 2008–09 season, Purcell split his time between the Monarchs in the AHL and the Kings in the NHL. He played 40 games in the NHL, scoring 4 goals and 12 assists.
Moving to New Teams
In 2010, Purcell was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning. He really started to shine with his new team. On February 23, 2011, he scored his first NHL hat trick against the Phoenix Coyotes. He ended that season with 51 points and then added 17 points in 18 games during the 2011 Stanley Cup playoffs, helping his team go far.
In 2011, he signed a new contract with Tampa Bay. The next season, 2011–12, was his best yet! He scored 24 goals and 65 points. Because of his great play, he was chosen to play for Team Canada in the 2012 IIHF World Championship. He signed another contract extension with the Lightning in 2012.
In 2014, Purcell was traded to the Edmonton Oilers. He played two seasons there. In 2016, he was traded again, this time to the Florida Panthers.
Returning to the Kings and Beyond
On July 1, 2016, Teddy Purcell decided to go back to his first NHL team, the Los Angeles Kings, signing a one-year contract. However, his return wasn't as successful, and he later played for the Kings' AHL team, the Ontario Reign. He still showed his scoring touch in the AHL, getting 38 points in 38 games.
In 2017, he tried out for the Boston Bruins but didn't get a contract. He then played one season in Russia for Avangard Omsk in the KHL before ending his playing career in 2018.
