The black-crowned tityra (Tityra inquisitor) is a medium-sized bird that loves to perch. It's known for its dark cap, which looks like a crown! This bird is part of a group called passerines, which are often called "perching birds."
Scientists used to place this bird in the cotinga or tyrant flycatcher families. But now, most evidence suggests it belongs in its own family, the Tityridae.
You can find the black-crowned tityra in many countries across Central and South America. These include Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela.
This bird's favorite places to live are warm, wet habitats. It likes subtropical or tropical lowland forests. It can also be found in areas where forests have been changed by humans, but it still prefers places with lots of trees.
What are the different types of Black-crowned Tityra?
Even though they are all black-crowned tityras, there are slightly different groups of them. These groups are called subspecies. They might look a little different or live in specific areas.
Black-crowned Tityra Subspecies
- Tityra inquisitor inquisitor: This group lives in tropical southeastern Brazil, eastern Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina.
- Tityra inquisitor fraserii: You can find this type from tropical southeastern Mexico all the way to central Panama.
- Tityra inquisitor albitorques: This subspecies lives from tropical eastern Panama to northwestern Bolivia and western Amazonian Brazil.
- Tityra inquisitor buckleyi: This group is found in tropical southeastern Colombia and eastern Ecuador.
- Tityra inquisitor erythrogenys: This type lives in tropical eastern Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, and northern Brazil.
- Tityra inquisitor pelzelni: This subspecies is found in tropical northeastern Bolivia, Mato Grosso, and Brazil south of the Amazon River.
