Biography

How Tiziano Ferro Started in Music

Tiziano Ferro's love for music began when he got a toy keyboard as a gift. He used it to write his first songs when he was seven years old. Later, he took guitar and piano lessons at a local music school. When he was 16, he joined a gospel choir. Around the same time, he started performing in piano bars and karaoke contests.

In 1997, Ferro tried out for a music contest called "Accademia della Canzone di Sanremo." This contest helped choose singers for the Sanremo Music Festival. But he was eliminated early on. The next year, he tried again and was one of the 12 finalists. He didn't win, but he met music producers Alberto Salerno and Mara Maionchi. He then started working with them.

In 1999, Ferro also toured Italy as a back vocalist for the Italian hip hop band Sottotono.

Tiziano Ferro's Big Break

In 2001, Tiziano Ferro signed a contract with EMI Music Italy. On 22 June 2001, he released his first song, "Xdono". At first, the song wasn't very popular. But it later became a huge hit. It reached number one on the Italian Singles Chart in September 2001. It sold over 100,000 copies, earning a "double platinum" award.

The song was part of Ferro's first album, Rosso Relativo, released on 26 October 2001. Because it was so successful in Italy, the album was released in other European countries in 2002. A Spanish-language version, called Rojo Relativo, was also released in Spain and Latin America. Rosso Relativo did well in many places. By 2004, it had sold over 1,000,000 copies worldwide. The album also helped Ferro get nominated for Best New Artist at the Latin Grammy Awards of 2003.

Second Album: 111

In November 2003, Ferro released his second album, 111. He recorded it in both Italian and Spanish. Alberto Salerno, Mara Maionchi, and Michele Canova produced the album. Before the album, he released the song ""Xverso" / "Perverso"". Other popular songs from the album included "Sere nere" / "Tardes negras", "Non me lo so spiegare" / "No me lo puedo explicar" and "Ti voglio bene" / "Desde mañana no lo sé". 111 sold over 1,000,000 copies worldwide. It reached number one on the Mexican Albums Chart. In Italy, it sold over 450,000 copies, earning a "four times platinum" award. After this success, Ferro won Best Italian Artist at the 2004 MTV Europe Music Awards in Rome.

In July 2004, Ferro also released his first English-language song in Europe. It was called "Universal Prayer". This song was a duet with British R&B singer Jamelia. They recorded it to promote the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.

Ferro lived in Mexico during these years, first in Cuernavaca and later in Puebla. He studied Spanish at a university there. He graduated in August 2005 before moving to Manchester.

Third Album: Nessuno è solo

Tiziano Ferro's third album, Nessuno è solo (meaning "No One Is Alone"), came out in June 2006. The first song from it was "Stop! Dimentica". This song became a number-one hit in Italy and Austria. Music critics said the album was more personal and thoughtful. It was even more successful in Italy than his earlier albums. It reached "diamond certification" for its sales in Italy.

The third song from the album, "Ti scatterò una foto," was used in the movie Ho voglia di te. This movie was directed by Luis Prieto. Nessuno è solo also has a song with Italian singer-songwriter Biagio Antonacci. The Spanish version of the album includes "Mi credo," a song recorded with Pepe Aguilar.

Fourth Album: Alla mia età

In June 2008, Ferro helped write the song "Non ti scordar mai di me" with Roberto Casalino. This song was for Giusy Ferreri, who was a runner-up on X Factor Italy. The song became a huge hit in Italy, staying at number one for 12 weeks. Ferro also produced Giusy Ferreri's first album, Gaetana. This album had 6 songs written by him, including "L'amore e basta!", a duet with Ferreri.

On 7 November 2008, Ferro released his fourth album, Alla mia età (meaning "At My Age"). It was released after the song with the same title. Alla mia età started at number one on the Italian Albums Chart. It became the best-selling album of 2009 in Italy. It also earned Ferro his second "diamond certification." The album includes a song with singer-songwriter Franco Battiato. "Breathe Gentle", the English version of the third song "Indietro", features Kelly Rowland. Other artists who worked on the album include Italian singer Laura Pausini, Anahí and Dulce María from the Mexican pop group RBD, and Amaia Montero.

In November 2009, Ferro released his first video album, Alla mia età – Live in Rome. It was recorded during his concerts at the Stadio Olimpico on 24 and 25 June 2009. A few months later, Ferro was chosen to write and record the Italian version of Mary J. Blige's song "Each Tear". This song was on her album Stronger with Each Tear. The song reached the top spot on the Italian Singles Chart.

Fifth Album: L'amore è una cosa semplice

In October 2011, Ferro released "La differenza tra me e te". This was the main song from his fifth album, L'amore è una cosa semplice (meaning "Love Is a Simple Thing"). The album came out on 28 November 2011. It stayed at the top of the Italian Albums Chart for five weeks. All seven songs released from the album earned "gold" or higher awards in Italy. The album itself received an "eight times platinum" award. It became the best-selling album of 2012.

In the spring and summer of 2012, Ferro went on a concert tour mostly in Italy. He also performed in Switzerland, Belgium, and Monaco. The biggest moment of the tour was Ferro's first full stadium concert at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. This concert was sold out, with 50,000 fans attending.

In 2012, Ferro wrote the song "Per Te" for Andrea Bocelli. This song was on the album of the famous jazz player Chris Botti. This earned him a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Album.

In 2013, Ferro decided to work with other artists. Italian hip hop artist Baby K released her first album Una seria in March. Ferro produced it with Michele Canova. Ferro was featured on the first song "Killer," which reached number 10 on the Italian Singles Chart. It also earned a "platinum" award. He was also on the album's third song, "Sei sola." The first song, "Senza scappare mai più", and the second song, "Incanto", both reached the top five in Italy. They also earned "platinum" awards. The album itself was number one for six weeks. One of those weeks was after his special performance at the Sanremo Music Festival 2015. It eventually earned a "seven times platinum" award. It stayed in the top ten on the Italian album chart for almost a year. In Spain, it was Ferro's first album to reach the top ten in over ten years.

In the summer of 2015, Ferro toured the main Italian stadiums. This included two concerts at the San Siro stadium in Milan and two at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. The Milan concerts were recorded and added to a new CD/DVD version of TZN – The Best of Tiziano Ferro. This was released in November 2015. That same month, Ferro started a European arena tour to keep promoting his greatest hits collection.

Ferro announced the release date of his sixth album a year in advance. He told the crowd at his European arena tour that it would be released on 2 December 2016. In June, the album's title was revealed to be Il mestiere della vita (meaning "The Job of Life"). The album's first song, "Potremmo ritornare", was released in October. It debuted at the top of the Italian Singles Chart. It was his first number-one hit as the main artist since 2008's "Alla mia età".

Many artists worked on this album, including Baby K, Raige, Emanuele Dabbono, Tormento, and Carmen Consoli. Ferro and Consoli sang the second song, "Il conforto", released on 13 January 2017. This song reached the 4th position on the Italian Singles Chart. The album has 13 songs. It features pop, rap, and R&B sounds. The songs talk about themes like forgiveness, fear, and anger.

Tiziano Ferro as an Author

Ferro's first novel, La felicità al principio (Happiness at the Beginning), was published in Italy on 3 October 2023. It tells the story of Angelo Galassi, a former Italian pop star living quietly in New York. He has to deal with his own problems and get his life back on track for his young daughter, whom he has just discovered. In September 2023, Ferro canceled his Italian tour to promote the novel. He explained that personal reasons kept him from leaving his home in Los Angeles with his children.

Personal Life and Challenges

In 2006, Ferro appeared on an Italian TV show. He made a joke about Mexican women that caused some upset among his Mexican fans. This had a negative effect on his album sales there.

Ferro faced personal challenges starting in 2008. In early 2010, he shared more about his life with his father. This event inspired the title of his first book, Trent'anni e una chiacchierata con papà (Thirty years old and a chat with dad). This book, published in October 2010, is based on his personal diaries. Its release was followed by an interview with Vanity Fair where he spoke openly about his life. The next year, Ferro moved back to Italy to be closer to his friends and family. Ferro released a second book about his life, L'amore è una cosa semplice (Love is a simple thing), in February 2013.
