The Toledo Metropolitan Area is a large region in Ohio, United States. It is also known as Greater Toledo or Northwest Ohio. This area includes the main city of Toledo, Ohio and its surrounding communities.

As of 2020, about 646,604 people live here. This makes it the sixth-largest metropolitan area in the state of Ohio. It is smaller than areas like Cincinnati and Cleveland.

The Toledo area is located near the border with Michigan. It includes three counties in Ohio: Fulton, Lucas, and Wood. Many people who live in southern Monroe County, Michigan also travel to Toledo for work. The Toledo area is also part of a larger region called the Great Lakes Megalopolis.

The economy in Toledo has changed over time. It used to be very connected to the economy of nearby Detroit, especially in car manufacturing. Farming is also a big part of the economy in the surrounding rural areas.

In 2015, some big companies in Toledo were on the Fortune 500 list. These are lists of the largest companies in the U.S.

  • Owens-Illinois (O-I) makes glass and glass packaging.
  • Dana Corporation is a leader in making parts for vehicles.
  • Owens Corning is a top company for glass fiber technology.

Recently, downtown Toledo has been getting a fresh look. Many new restaurants and fun places have opened up.

Jobs and Growth in the Region

Toledo still has many jobs in manufacturing and construction. These are jobs where people make things or build buildings. In 2014, manufacturing jobs grew by 4.1% in Toledo. Construction jobs grew even faster, by almost 10%.

In 2014, about 285,000 people had jobs in the Toledo area. By 2015, the unemployment rate (the number of people without jobs) was very low. It was 5%, which was even lower than the national average for the U.S. at that time.

People of the Toledo Area

The Toledo Metropolitan Area is home to many different people. In 2010, there were about 659,188 people living here.

Most people in the area are White (83.03%). About 12.01% are African American. There are also smaller groups of Native American, Asian, and Pacific Islander people. About 4.35% of the population is Hispanic or Latino.

The average income for a family in the area was about $51,882 per year in 2010.
