The Triangle Metro Zoo was a special place where many animals lived. It was a private zoo in Wake Forest, North Carolina, in the United States. This zoo was open for about eight years, from 1998 to 2006. It covered an area of 40 acres, which is about 30 football fields! When it first opened, it was called Zoo Fauna.

A Look Back: The Zoo's Story

The idea for the zoo came from Larry Seibel, who had a lot of experience raising unique animals. He opened the zoo in 1998. It was built in a very green, wooded area next to a small stream. The zoo got its name, "Triangle Metro Zoo," because it was located in an area of North Carolina called "the Triangle." This name comes from the three big cities nearby: Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill.

Not long after the zoo opened in 1998, a building that held the gift shop and restrooms caught fire and burned down. This building was never rebuilt. The owner said that not having these important facilities made it hard to get enough money for the zoo. This was one of the reasons why the zoo eventually closed.

The zoo closed its doors in February 2006. The owner, Larry Seibel, mentioned money problems and personal challenges as reasons for closing. Also, new buildings and homes were being built closer to the zoo, which would have meant building a fence around the whole property.

After the zoo closed, many animals needed new homes. A special Bengal tiger named Raja, who had been rescued by the zoo staff, moved to the Carolina Tiger Rescue in Pittsboro, North Carolina. Before moving there, Raja stayed for a short time at the North Carolina Zoo. Other animals from the Triangle Metro Zoo went to live in different private collections and other zoos.
