The 2017 Triple J Hottest 100 was a big music event in Australia. It happened on January 27, 2018. This was the 25th time the popular radio station Triple J counted down the year's top songs.
A huge number of people, over 2.38 million, voted for their favorite songs from 2017. This was a new record for the countdown!
The song "Humble" by Kendrick Lamar won first place. This was a special win because it was the first time a person of color topped the Hottest 100. It was also the first time a non-Australian artist won since 2012. Plus, it was the first hip hop song to win in many years.
Kendrick Lamar had four songs in the top 100. Other artists with four songs were Gang of Youths, Lorde, and The Jungle Giants. Gang of Youths even had three songs in the top 10, which was a record!
Usually, the Hottest 100 countdown is on January 26, which is Australia Day. But in 2017, the date was changed to January 27. This was because some people felt Australia Day was not a day for celebration. This was the first time the countdown happened on a different day since 2003.

How the Hottest 100 Works
The Triple J Hottest 100 lets people vote for their top ten songs of the year. These votes are then used to find the 100 most popular songs. For the 2017 countdown, any song released between December 2016 and November 2017 could be voted for. Voting started on December 12, 2017.
Some Triple J presenters shared their own votes. They often picked songs by Kendrick Lamar, Lorde, Gang of Youths, and Baker Boy. Many people thought "Humble" by Kendrick Lamar would win. Other popular predictions were "Green Light" by Lorde and "The Deepest Sighs, the Frankest Shadows" by Gang of Youths.
Kendrick Lamar's highest spot before this was No. 2 in 2015 with "King Kunta". Lorde's highest was No. 2 in 2013 with "Royals".
Triple J announced that 1.5 million votes were cast five days before voting closed. This was more than any other year at that point. When voting ended, they shared that a total of 2,386,133 votes were counted. This broke the previous year's record by 5.8%!
Why the Date Changed
Since mid-2016, many people wanted Triple J to change the Hottest 100 date. This idea was strongly supported by Indigenous Australians and their allies. For many Indigenous people, Australia Day is seen as "Invasion Day." The hip hop group A.B. Original helped bring attention to this issue with their song "January 26."
Triple J started looking into changing the date in September 2016. They talked with groups like Reconciliation Australia. In August 2017, Triple J asked the public what they thought through a survey. Many people, including former Triple J presenters, supported the date change.
On November 27, 2017, Triple J announced the Hottest 100 would move. It would now be held on the fourth weekend of January. A survey showed that 60% of listeners wanted the date moved. Many musicians and the Australian Greens liked this decision. However, some politicians from the Liberal Party were not happy.
Some other radio stations and groups offered their own music countdowns on Australia Day. For example, Triple M played an Ozzest 100 with only Australian songs.
