Samuel Timothy McGraw (born May 1, 1967) is an American country singer and actor. He is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, having sold more than 80 million records around the world.

McGraw has released 17 studio albums. Ten of these albums reached number one on the Top Country Albums charts. He has had 65 singles, and 25 of them reached number one on the country music charts. Some of his most famous songs include "It's Your Love," "Just to See You Smile," and "Live Like You Were Dying."

Over his career, McGraw has won many awards, including three Grammy Awards, 14 Academy of Country Music awards, and 11 Country Music Association (CMA) awards. His tour with his wife, fellow singer Faith Hill, called the Soul2Soul II Tour, is one of the most successful tours in country music history.

Besides music, McGraw is also an actor. He has appeared in movies like The Blind Side, Friday Night Lights, and Tomorrowland. He also starred in the TV series 1883.

Early Life and Family

Samuel Timothy McGraw was born in Delhi, Louisiana. His mother was a waitress named Elizabeth "Betty" Ann D'Agostino, and his father was Frank Edwin "Tug" McGraw Jr., a famous baseball pitcher for the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies.

When Tim was a child, he believed his stepfather, Horace Smith, was his father. When he was 11, he found his birth certificate and learned the truth. His mother then took him to meet his biological father, Tug McGraw. For seven years, Tug denied that Tim was his son. When Tim turned 18, they formed a close relationship that lasted until Tug's death in 2004.

As a kid, McGraw loved playing sports, especially baseball. After high school, he went to Northeast Louisiana University on a baseball scholarship and planned to study law. However, a knee injury stopped him from becoming a professional athlete.

While in college, McGraw learned to play the guitar and started singing for money. In 1989, he decided to leave college and move to Nashville to become a country music star.

In 1990, McGraw signed a contract with Curb Records. His first single, "What Room Was the Holiday In," was released in 1991 but wasn't a big hit. His first album, Tim McGraw, released in 1993, also did not sell well.

His big break came with his second album, Not a Moment Too Soon, in 1994. It became the best-selling country album of that year. The first single, "Indian Outlaw," caused some debate but became his first Top 10 hit. The next single, "Don't Take the Girl", was his first number-one song. The album sold over 6 million copies and won him awards for Album of the Year and Top New Male Vocalist.

Rise to Stardom in the 1990s

McGraw's success continued with his third album, All I Want (1995). It featured the hit song "I Like It, I Love It", which became his third number-one single. In 1996, he went on The Spontaneous Combustion Tour with Faith Hill as his opening act. They fell in love and got married later that year.

His fourth album, Everywhere (1997), was another huge success. It had four number-one singles, including "It's Your Love" (a duet with Faith Hill) and "Just to See You Smile". "Just to See You Smile" set a record at the time for staying on the country charts for 42 weeks.

In 1999, he released A Place in the Sun, which also topped the charts. It included four more number-one hits, such as "Please Remember Me" and "Something Like That".

Continued Success in the 2000s

His 2001 album, Set This Circus Down, produced four more number-one singles, including "The Cowboy in Me". In 2002, he recorded the album Tim McGraw and the Dancehall Doctors with his touring band, which was unusual for country music at the time but showed his loyalty to his bandmates.

In 2004, McGraw released Live Like You Were Dying. The title song was a tribute to his father, Tug, who had passed away that year. The song became a huge hit, winning multiple awards and encouraging people to live life to the fullest. Later that year, he collaborated with hip-hop artist Nelly on the song "Over and Over", which became a hit worldwide.
