Uh Oh! was a super fun Canadian TV game show that aired on YTV. It was created by Rick Watts and Frank Young. The show ran from August 22, 1997, to April 19, 2003. It was actually a spin-off from another popular YTV show called It's Alive!.

Uh Oh! started as a game segment on It's Alive! before becoming its own show. It became one of the longest-running shows on YTV! The show was filmed in Toronto, Ontario, at Global Television studios.

How Uh Oh! Started

Uh Oh! got its start from a funny game show sketch on It's Alive!. In that sketch, contestants were chained up and answered questions. If they got an answer wrong, a character called "The Punisher" would pour slime on them!

Later, the creators realized this silly game could be a real show. So, Uh Oh! became a part of It's Alive!'s game show section. It was a shorter game back then, with just one round. But it quickly became the most popular game!

After It's Alive! ended in 1997, Uh Oh! became its own full TV show. It kept the same rules but added a second round called the Slime Tour. This new round was inspired by an obstacle course from It's Alive!.

Playing the Game

The game featured three teams, each with two players. Teams were colored Blue, Green, or Red. The goal was to earn more points than the other teams to win the grand prize! Even audience members picked a side by wearing clothes of their favorite team's color.

One player from each team would spin a giant wheel, and their partner would do whatever activity the wheel landed on. These activities often involved lots of goo and were super silly! If a team won a game, they earned points.

For its later episodes in Season 1, Uh Oh! was sponsored by Post Honeycomb cereal. In Seasons 5 and 6, Fruit Gushers became the main sponsor.

Meet the Cast

The show had a fantastic cast of characters who made the game exciting and messy!

  • Wink Yahoo (Scott Yaphe) was the super energetic and wacky host of the show. He had a huge pompadour hairstyle and wore flashy, sparkly suits. Wink loved to tease the teams and got really excited when the wheel landed on "Uh Oh!".
  • Slashin' Sam (Samantha Cook) and Tearin' Aaron (Aaron Alexander) were the referees for the Mayhem games. They helped the players with the messy challenges.
  • Quizmaster Patricia (Patricia Ribeiro) was in charge of asking questions during the Speed Round. She also watched players at The Dump.
  • The Slime Master (Shaun Majumder/Ryan Belleville) hosted the Slime Tour. He described all the action as players went through the obstacle courses. Shaun Majumder was the Slime Master for the first four seasons, and Ryan Belleville took over for the last two.
  • Christian Hagen, Erin Strimaitis, Akua Otupiri, and Dawn Cox were the Slime Master's helpers. They introduced and helped players at different parts of the Slime Tour.
  • The Punisher (Mike Beaver/Sean "Bubba" Loucks) was a masked character who loved goo! At the start of the show, he would burst out of a cage, often attacking audience members or even Wink with goo! During the game, his main job was to drag a player to the "Uh Oh!" booth and pour goo on them if their team got a question wrong.
  • Mr. Voiceman (Dwayne Hill/Mike 'Nug' Nahrgang) was the show's announcer. He introduced the show, Wink, and the teams.

How the Game Was Played

Show Opening

Each show began with Mr. Voiceman asking the audience a funny question, like "What do you say when you press the eject button on a toilet seat?". The audience would shout "UH OH!" as the main theme song played. Then, Wink Yahoo and the other hosts were introduced, followed by the teams and The Punisher.

Round 1: The Spinning Wheel

In the first round, one player from each team would spin a large wheel with 12 sections. Their partner, wearing goggles, would wait at the other end of the studio to do whatever the wheel landed on! Each team took turns spinning the wheel.

The wheel had different spaces:

  • Uh Oh!
  • Mayhem
  • Speed Round
  • The Dump
  • Win and Spin
  • Trade and Spin

Wink would often explain that a spin could change your points, make you do messy activities, or give you quick quizzes!

Round 2: The Slime Tour

The second round was the famous Slime Tour! This part of the show featured footage from different locations across Canada. Three contestants, wearing Yellow, Orange, and Purple, raced through a themed obstacle course.

Before the race, the studio teams had to guess which color contestant they thought would win. If they guessed right, they earned 35 points! The obstacle courses were usually made of three different activities. They often involved physical skills, speed, and almost always got the contestant super messy! The winner of the race won a prize.

The Slime Tour visited many cities across Canada, including:

In the final season, the Slime Tour was renamed "Field Games" and all races took place in Toronto.

Round 3: The Final Spin

In the third and final round, the players switched roles. The person who was doing the activities in Round 1 now spun the wheel, and their partner did the activities. The wheel itself looked different in this round.

New spaces were added over the seasons, like:

The game ended when the team with the most points won the grand prize! If there was a tie, teams would answer a quick question to break it.

Credits

During the credits, a voiceover would always read a silly statement instead of the usual "Due to technical difficulties..." messages.

The Games You Could Play

Here's a closer look at the different games you could land on:

  • Uh Oh!: This was the show's main game! Wink would ask the spinner a multiple-choice question. Meanwhile, The Punisher would put the spinner's partner in a glass booth. If the spinner answered correctly, their team got 50 points, and their partner stayed clean. But if they answered wrong, no points were given, and The Punisher would pour goo all over the partner!
    • Uh Oh! Deluxe: This was an upgraded "Uh Oh!" worth 75 points. The question was harder, and the penalty was double the goo! Sometimes, the second bucket of goo was extra shiny or had sparkles. In Season 4, Wink would make the spinner taste or sniff something (often blindfolded) and guess its ingredients.
  • Mayhem: In this game, Sam or Aaron would tell the spinner's partner to complete a physical, often messy, challenge in 20 seconds. This could involve searching for items in goo, shooting targets with projectiles, or grabbing things with their mouth. Mayhem games were worth up to 50 points.
  • Speed Round: This was a fast-paced game where Patricia asked the spinner up to 10 questions in 20 seconds. Each correct answer was worth 5 points, for a total of 50 points!
  • The Dump: The spinner would drop a ball through a pipe onto a game board with pegs, flippers, and obstacles, like a giant Plinko game. The ball would land in different spots that could win or lose points for their team, or even steal points from other teams! The most you could win was 50 points.
  • ... & Spin:
    • Win & Spin gave the team 20 points and an extra spin.
    • Lose & Spin made the team lose 20 points but gave them an extra spin to try and get some points back.
    • Trade & Spin was a wild card! It forced the team to swap scores with another team they chose. This could totally change who was winning!
  • Pick It!: This game appeared in Season 5. The spinner got to choose which game they wanted to play next: Uh Oh!, Mayhem, Speed Round, The Dump, or Uh Oh! Deluxe. If they didn't pick in 5 seconds, they lost their turn.
  • Fruit Gushers: In the final season, this game replaced Pick It!. The spinner's partner had to bob for giant Fruit Gushers floating in a huge Fruit Gusher pool for 20 seconds. Each Gusher had a team color and a point value, and the team won those points! Points ranged from 5 to 75.

Awesome Prizes

The winning team at the end of each show took home cool prizes like Super Soakers, Mountain bikes, and stereos. Audience members always got Hubba Bubba bubble gum! Other audience prizes included Oreo cookies, Rock Candy, and Bop It games.

On one early episode, if a team landed on The Dump, they won two Rawlings NCAA basketballs! In another episode, The Punisher was sad because no one landed on "Uh Oh!". So, a lucky audience member got to answer an "Uh Oh!"-style question to win a basketball. If they got it wrong, they got slimed!
