Discover Upper Wolfjaw Mountain

Upper Wolfjaw Mountain is a tall peak in the beautiful Adirondack Mountains of New York. It is one of the many mountains that make up the Great Range, a chain of impressive peaks. The mountain is located near the town of Keene. It is a popular spot for hikers who want to explore the wild nature of the Adirondacks.

Why Is It Called Wolfjaw?

The unique name "Wolfjaw" comes from a landscape artist named Alexander Helwig Wyant. Around 1870, he looked at Upper Wolfjaw Mountain and its neighbor, Lower Wolfjaw Mountain. He thought their shapes, when seen from the side, looked like the jaws of a wolf. That's how these mountains got their cool names!

Where Does the Water Go?

Water from Upper Wolfjaw Mountain travels a long way! The mountain is part of the watershed of the East Branch of the Ausable River. This means that all the rain and melting snow from the mountain flows into this river.

  • Water from the east and southeast sides of Upper Wolfjaw Mountain flows into the East Branch of the Ausable River.
  • Water from the west side goes into Ore Body Brook, then into Johns Brook, and finally into the East Branch.
  • Water from the north side flows into Wolfjaw Brook, which also joins Johns Brook.

From the Ausable River, the water then flows into Lake Champlain. After that, it travels into Canada's Richelieu River. The Richelieu River then joins the mighty Saint Lawrence River, which eventually empties into the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the Atlantic Ocean.
