Vellerat is a small village that used to be its own town (called a municipality) in Switzerland. It's located in the Jura canton, which is like a state or region in Switzerland. Vellerat is part of the Delémont area.
On January 1, 2019, Vellerat joined with another former town called Rebeuvelier. Both of them became part of the larger town of Courrendlin.

Vellerat's History
Vellerat was first mentioned in old records way back in 1741. It was known as Vellerat even then.
Joining the Jura Canton
For a long time, Vellerat was part of the canton of Bern. But the people wanted to join the canton of Jura. In 1996, there was a special vote across all of Switzerland. People voted on whether Vellerat could leave Bern and become part of Jura. Most people, about 91.6%, voted yes! So, Vellerat officially joined the Jura canton.

Vellerat covers an area of about 2.04 square kilometers. That's roughly 0.79 square miles.

There's even an asteroid named after Vellerat! It's called 212374 Vellerat. An amateur astronomer named Michel Ory discovered it in 2006. The name was officially given in 2020. How cool is that?
