The Western Antique Aeroplane and Automobile Museum, also known as WAAAM, is a cool museum in Hood River, Oregon. It's right next to the Ken Jernstedt Airfield. This museum is all about amazing old airplanes, cars, and motorcycles, especially those from the early 1900s to the 1930s. It's a great place to see how transportation used to be!

History of WAAAM

The WAAAM museum started in 2006. A collector named Terry Brandt helped create it. The museum first opened its doors in 2007. It began with 42 airplanes and 20 cars that Terry Brandt donated.

The museum quickly grew! By September 2010, it had 75 airplanes and over 100 cars. About 55 of these airplanes could still fly back then. To show off all these vehicles, a second building was added in 2009. A third building was built in 2013, and a fourth in 2016. Today, the museum has over 400 vehicles in its collection!

What You Can See: Exhibits

One special exhibit is the front of a 1940s airplane hangar. This part was saved from Evergreen Airport in 2008. It's now on display at WAAAM.

Airplanes

WAAAM has a huge collection of old airplanes. Many of them are from the early days of flight. You can see different types of planes, from gliders to military aircraft.

Automobiles

The museum also has a fantastic collection of antique cars. You can see many different models from the early 1900s.

Fun Events at WAAAM

A morning at the WAAAM Fly-In event

The museum hosts two big events each year. The Hood River Fly-In happens on the first weekend after Labor Day. It's a chance to see many of the museum's planes in action! They also have a Traffic Jam Car Show in early July. This event brings together many amazing old cars.

Educational Programs

WAAAM offers special driving schools. You can learn how to drive a Model T or other vintage cars. It's a unique way to experience history!
