The William M. Jennings Trophy is a special award in the National Hockey League (NHL). It is given each year to the goaltender(s) whose team lets in the fewest goals during the regular season. To win, a goalie must play at least 25 games.
This trophy is named after William M. Jennings. He was a very important person for the New York Rangers hockey team for many years. Before 1981, a different award, the Vezina Trophy, was given for this same reason. But then the rules changed. The Jennings Trophy was created in 1982 to take its place.
Since 1982, this award has been given out for 40 seasons. It has gone to 44 different players. Often, two goalies on the same team share the award. The most recent winner is Connor Hellebuyck from the Winnipeg Jets. His team allowed only 191 goals in the 2024–25 season. This was the lowest in the league.
History of the Jennings Trophy
For many years, from 1946 to 1981, the Vezina Trophy was given to the goalie (or goalies) on the team that allowed the fewest goals. But people realized this award often went to the goalie on the best team, not always the best individual goalie.
So, the NHL decided to change the Vezina Trophy. It would now go to the most outstanding goalie, chosen by the NHL's general managers. To replace the old Vezina rule, the William M. Jennings Trophy was created. It would still honor the goalie(s) on the team with the fewest goals against.
The NHL's board of governors donated the Jennings Trophy. It was first given out after the 1981–82 season. It honors William M. Jennings, who helped build ice hockey in the United States. Usually, a goalie needs to play 25 games to be eligible. However, in the shorter 1994–95 season, only 14 games were needed.
Some goalies have won both the Jennings and Vezina Trophies in the same season. These include Patrick Roy (in 1988 and 1991) and Martin Brodeur (in 2002 and 2003). Roy and Brodeur have won the Jennings Trophy five times each. This is more than any other goalie. Ed Belfour is next, with four wins. The Montreal Canadiens team has won the trophy six times. The New Jersey Devils and Chicago Blackhawks have won it five times each.
