The 1986–87 NHL season was the 70th exciting year for the National Hockey League (NHL). Twenty-one teams played 80 games each. The Edmonton Oilers won the famous Stanley Cup by defeating the Philadelphia Flyers in a thrilling final series, winning four games to three.

The Edmonton Oilers were the best team in the regular season, winning the Presidents' Trophy for the second year in a row. Their superstar player, Wayne Gretzky, had an amazing season.
