107 Camilla facts for kids
107 Camilla is a very large asteroid that travels in the main asteroid belt. It is part of a special group called the Cybele Group, which orbits a bit further out than most other asteroids in the main belt. Camilla has a very dark surface and is mostly made of a material called carbonate.
An astronomer named N. R. Pogson found Camilla on November 17, 1868. He named it after Camilla, who was a queen in Roman mythology.
Scientists have studied how bright Camilla appears as it spins. This helps them figure out that its top-to-bottom axis is tilted by about 29 degrees, similar to how Earth is tilted.
Camilla's Moon: S/2001 (107) 1
On March 1, 2001, scientists found a moon orbiting Camilla. A team of researchers, including A. Storrs, F. Vilas, R. Landis, E. Wells, C. Woods, B. Zellner, and M. Gaffey, discovered it using the Hubble Space Telescope. This moon has a temporary name: S/2001 (107) 1. It does not yet have an official name. Later, in September 2005, scientists used a powerful telescope called the VLT to learn more about the moon's path around Camilla. They found that its orbit is tilted by less than 10 degrees compared to Camilla's own tilt. The moon is thought to be about 11 km wide. If it has a similar density to Camilla, it would weigh about 1.5 million billion kilograms. The moon also has a similar dark color to Camilla. |
