Big Events of 1288
Battles and Borders
On June 5, a huge battle took place in Europe called the Battle of Worringen. John I of Brabant led his forces to victory against the duchy of Guelders. This win helped him gain control of the duchy of Limburg. It was one of the largest battles of the Middle Ages!
The battle also had another big effect. It freed the city of Cologne from the control of the Archbishopric of Cologne. Cologne had been a very important church-controlled area in the Holy Roman Empire. Now, it was more independent.
Popes and Kings
On August 8, Pope Nicholas IV made a big announcement. He called for a special campaign against King Ladislaus IV of Hungary. The Pope was concerned because King Ladislaus seemed to favor his Cuman subjects, who had different customs. He also didn't follow the usual social rules of Western Europe at the time.
Interesting Laws
In Scotland, the Parliament created a very unique law. It allowed women to propose marriage to men, but only during leap years! If a man said no to such a proposal, he had to pay a fine to the woman. This was a fun and unusual rule for its time.
Ancient Bells
Did you know that the oldest surviving bell in the clocks on top of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome dates back to 1288? This means it has been ringing for hundreds of years!
Clever Victories in Asia
In Vietnam, a brilliant general named Trần Hưng Đạo used a very smart trick to defeat an invading army. The Yuan dynasty Mongol army had a huge fleet of ships. General Tran Hung Dao placed special bamboo stakes with steel tips in the Bach Dang River, near Hạ Long Bay. When the Mongol ships sailed in, they were pierced by these hidden stakes, and their entire fleet sank! This was a major victory for Vietnam.
Changes in Japan
In Japan, the Japanese era known as Koan came to an end in 1288. After that, a new era began, which was called the Shōō era. These eras were used to mark periods of time in Japanese history.
