- In Paris, France, the very first real restaurant opened. A man named Boulanger started it. He sold hot, cooked meals all night long.
- Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot created an early version of the automobile. It was a three-wheeled vehicle designed to pull heavy cannons.
- James Watt made a much better steam engine. His new design was more powerful and efficient than older engines.

- In Lisbon, Portugal, the auto-da-fé parades were stopped. These were public events that often led to violence against people accused of not following the main religion.
