King Charles III (the Simple) (879–929)
The year 911 (written as CMXI in Roman numerals) was a common year. It started on a Tuesday in the old Julian calendar. Many important things happened around the world during this time.

Changes in Europe
New Kings and Treaties
- In September, King Louis IV passed away. He was the last ruler from the Carolingian family in the East Frankish Kingdom (which is now Germany).
- After his death, important leaders (dukes) chose Conrad I to be their new king. This happened in a place called Forchheim.
- At the same time, Charles III was chosen as the king of Lotharingia, a kingdom between France and Germany.
- Later in the year, King Charles III of the West Frankish Kingdom (modern-day France) made a peace deal. He signed the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte with Rollo, a powerful Viking leader.
- As part of the deal, Rollo agreed to become a Christian and promised to be loyal to the king. In return, he was given land and became the first Count of Rouen. This was the start of the important region known as Normandy.
- Rollo also agreed to stop other Vikings from sailing up the Seine River to attack the West Frankish Kingdom.
Invasions and Conquests
- The Hungarians were a strong group of people. In 911, they crossed into Bavaria, Swabia, and Franconia. These areas are part of modern-day Germany.
- They took valuable things from these lands. After that, they crossed the Rhine River and attacked Burgundy for the first time. Burgundy is now part of France.
- In the Mediterranean Sea, the Fatimids began to take over Sicily. They were fighting against their rivals, the Aghlabids.
- The Fatimid governor of Sicily, Ibn al-Khinzir, also raided the coast of southern Italy.

- Lord Æthelred of Mercia passed away. Mercia was an important kingdom in England.
- His wife, Princess Æthelflæd, took over his role. She became known as the Lady of the Mercians.
- Her brother, King Edward the Elder, decided to take control of the important cities of London and Oxford.

- A group called the Kutama Berbers started a rebellion. They were fighting against the Fatimid Caliphate.
- The Kutama tribes had previously been strong supporters of the Fatimid rulers.
Religious Events
- On April 14, Pope Sergius III passed away in Rome. He had been the leader of the Catholic Church for seven years.
- After his death, Pope Anastasius III became the new pope. He was the 120th pope of the Catholic Church.
