Story of Sweet Diva
A Family Rivalry and a New Beginning
The story begins in 1999 in a made-up town called Rio Vermelho. Two families, the Ramirez and the Matheus, had been rivals for many years. But then, Maria da Paz (Juliana Paes) from the Ramirez family and Amadeu (Marcos Palmeira) from the Matheus family fell in love. They hoped their love would bring peace between their families.
However, on their wedding day, something unexpected happened to Amadeu. This event caused the family rivalry to start all over again. Maria had to leave town quickly, not knowing she was going to have a baby. Both families were told that Maria and Amadeu were no longer alive.
Separated Sisters and New Lives
As part of the family conflict, Maria's young nieces were also separated. One niece, Fabiana, ended up growing up in a convent. The other niece, Virginia, lived on the streets for a while before being adopted by a kind, wealthy couple, Beatriz and Otávio.
Twenty years later, Maria da Paz has become a very successful baker in São Paulo. She uses old family recipes to create delicious cakes and treats. However, she often has disagreements with her daughter, Josiane (Agatha Moreira). Josiane doesn't like her mother's simple style and wants to be a famous internet influencer.
Plans and Discoveries
Josiane knows she needs her mother's success to become well-known. She makes a plan with Régis (Reynaldo Gianecchini) to get her mother's money. Meanwhile, Maria meets Amadeu again and discovers that the story about them being gone was a lie. They want to be together, but Amadeu's wife, Gilda, becomes very sick. Maria then marries Régis, not knowing he is working with Josiane to take her fortune.
Maria's nieces have also grown up. Vivi (Paolla Oliveira) is now a famous internet personality, which is exactly what Josiane dreams of being. Vivi starts a strong relationship with Chiclete (Sérgio Guizé). Fabiana (Nathalia Dill), who had a difficult life in the convent, finds out Vivi is her sister. She becomes very jealous of Vivi's successful life and tries to cause problems for her. Fabiana also tries to get what she wants by using information she learns about Otávio and Josiane.

Making of Sweet Diva
Creative Ideas for the Story
The writer, Walcyr Carrasco, got ideas for Sweet Diva from different places. One idea came from an older telenovela called Vale Tudo. This show had a story about a daughter who tries to get ahead by taking from her mother.
Another inspiration was a book called Mildred Pierce, which is about a mother dealing with a difficult daughter. The romantic story between Maria da Paz and Amadeu, and the rivalry between their families, was inspired by the famous play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare.
Filming Locations and Title Change
The fictional town in the story, Rio Vermelho, is supposed to be in a state called Espírito Santo. However, the actual filming took place in Rio Grande do Sul, another state in Brazil. Cities like Jaguarão, Nova Esperança do Sul, São Gabriel, and Jaguari were used as backdrops for the show.
The telenovela was first going to be called Dias Felizes (Happy Days). But later, the name was changed to A Dona do Pedaço (The Owner of the Piece). This new title better showed the main character's journey and her fight for a better life. Filming for the first part of the story began in February 2019. The second part started filming in March 2019 at Estúdios Globo in Rio de Janeiro.
Choosing the Actors
Many talented actors were chosen for Sweet Diva. Juliana Paes, Paolla Oliveira, and Reynaldo Gianecchini were among the first to be selected for important roles.
Originally, Bianca Bin was asked to play the character Josiane, but she couldn't commit to the filming schedule. So, Agatha Moreira took on the role instead. Other actors like Lucy Ramos and Rosi Campos also joined the cast after some changes were made.
Laura Cardoso was initially announced for a role, but Betty Faria took over due to concerns about filming schedules. Later, Laura Cardoso did appear in the final episodes as a different character. Marieta Severo also turned down a role, which then went to Natália do Vale.
