AnimeNEXT (often called AN) is a fun three-day event held every year. It's a special gathering for fans of anime (Japanese animation) and manga (Japanese comics). The convention takes place at the Atlantic City Convention Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Before moving to Atlantic City, AnimeNEXT was held in other places. These included the Meadowlands Exposition Center in Secaucus, New Jersey, and the Garden State Exhibit Center in Somerset, New Jersey.

What Happens at AnimeNEXT?

AnimeNEXT offers many exciting activities for its visitors. You can find something fun to do no matter your interests.

  • Anime Music Videos (AMVs): Watch cool videos that combine anime clips with music.
  • Cosplay Chess: See cosplayers (people dressed as characters) play a giant game of chess.
  • Dance Parties: Enjoy music and dance with other fans.
  • Dealer's Room: Shop for anime, manga, figures, and other cool merchandise.
  • Karaoke: Sing your favorite songs, maybe even some anime theme songs!
  • Panels: Attend talks and Q&A sessions with special guests. You can learn about anime, manga, and Japanese culture.
  • Masquerade: Watch a costume contest where cosplayers show off their amazing outfits.
  • Video Gaming: Play video games with friends and other attendees.
  • Video Rooms: Relax and watch different anime series and movies.

A Look Back: AnimeNEXT's Journey

AnimeNEXT started in 2002. The first event was put together quite quickly, in about eight months.

Over the years, the convention grew a lot. In 2008, some parts of the event even took place in the parking garage! The convention then moved to the Garden State Exhibit Center. By 2012, it was so popular that lines for events stretched outside.

Because it kept growing, AnimeNEXT needed an even bigger home. So, in 2016, it moved to the Atlantic City Convention Center. This new location offered much more space for all the activities and fans.

In 2016, AnimeNEXT hosted a very important event. It was the United States finals for the World Cosplay Summit. This is a huge international cosplay competition.

AnimeNEXT 2020 had to be cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, the Atlantic City Convention Center was used as a vaccination site. Because of this, AnimeNEXT 2021 became an online-only event. The organizers planned to return to a physical event the next year.
