Annsville's Early History
Annsville started as a settlement in April 1793. A man named John W. Bloomfield moved from Burlington, New Jersey. He came to what is now the small community of Taberg. There, he built a saw mill and a grist mill. These mills helped process wood and grain.
How the Land Was Acquired
The land that makes up Annsville was first bought in 1791. John and Nicholas Roosevelt bought it from New York State. This large land purchase was for 530,000 acres. It covered parts of what are now Oswego and Oneida counties.
About 499,000 acres of this land became Scriba’s Patent in 1793. This happened because the Roosevelts owed money to the Scriba Bank. The land was then divided into different townships. Annsville includes parts of townships 1, 2, 3, and 8.
Who Were the First Settlers?
Many early families moved to the northern part of Annsville.

Besides farming, many early jobs in Annsville involved lumber. There were many trees, and streams provided water power for sawmills. A lot of lumber products were made.
Pig iron was also produced in Annsville. The Oneida Iron and Glass Manufacturing Company made it starting around 1811.
The railroad arrived in Annsville in the 1840s. The Watertown & Rome Railroad, later called the Rome, Watertown and Ogdensburg Railroad, built a station near Taberg. This made it easier to transport goods.
