Aransas County is a county in the U.S. state of Texas. It is located in South Texas. The main town, or county seat, is Rockport.

As of the 2020 census, about 23,830 people lived here. Aransas County is part of the Rockport area.

History of Aransas County

A long time ago, in 1519, a Spanish explorer named Alonso Álvarez de Pineda probably saw this land first. He sailed along the Texas coast and mapped Aransas Bay. The name "Aransas" comes from an old Spanish outpost. This outpost was named after a special church in Spain.

In 1871, the Texas government officially created Aransas County. It was formed from parts of Refugio County. The county was fully set up the next year, in 1872.

In August 2017, a very strong storm called Hurricane Harvey hit the county. It caused a lot of damage.

Aransas County covers a total area of 528 square miles. About 252 square miles is land. The other 276 square miles (52%) is water.

According to the 2020 United States census, there were 23,830 people living in the county. There were 9,917 households and 6,303 families.

Most people in Aransas County are White. A smaller number are Hispanic or Latino. There are also people of Black, Native American, Asian, and other backgrounds.

Education in Aransas County

Most students in Aransas County go to schools in the Rockport-Fulton Independent School District. This includes students from Rockport and Fulton.

Some students, especially those in Aransas Pass, attend the Aransas Pass Independent School District. Even though Aransas Pass is partly outside the county, its school district serves some county residents.

For college, Del Mar College is the community college for Aransas County.
