Arina Alekseyevna Averina (Russian: Арина Алексеевна Аверина) is a talented former rhythmic gymnast from Russia. She was born on August 13, 1998. Arina is known for her amazing skills and has won many medals. She was a finalist at the 2020 Summer Olympics. She also won silver medals twice at the World Championships in 2017 and 2019. Arina was also a two-time European all-around champion in 2018 and 2021. Her identical twin sister, Dina Averina, is also a very successful rhythmic gymnast.

About Arina Averina

Arina Averina was born on August 13, 1998. She is the identical twin sister of Dina Averina. Their older sister, Polina, is three years older. Arina and Dina started learning gymnastics when they were just four years old. You can tell Arina apart from Dina because Arina has a mole on her right cheekbone that is a little higher. She also has a small scar above her right eye from an accident with a club.

Arina's Gymnastics Journey

Starting as a Junior Gymnast

The Averina twins first trained with coach Larisa Belova. Later, they joined the Russian national team. They trained at the Olympic Training Center in Moscow. There, Vera Shatalina became their coach.

Arina and Dina started competing internationally in 2011. Arina finished 5th in the all-around at the 2011 Russian-Chinese Youth Games. In 2012, she won a bronze medal in the all-around at the Venera Cup in Israel. She also won other medals in different events.

In 2013, Arina won a team gold medal with Dina at the Happy Caravan Cup. She also earned a silver medal in the all-around at the 2013 Russian Spartakiada.

Becoming a Senior Gymnast

2014: First Senior Competitions

In 2014, Arina started competing as a senior gymnast. She won a silver medal at the 2014 Moscow Grand Prix. She then won gold at the 2014 Grand Prix Holon. At the 2014 Baltic Hoop, she won silver in the all-around. She also won gold in ball and other medals in different events.

2015: Winning Gold

Arina continued to do well in 2015. She won the all-around gold medal at the Corbeil-Essonnes International Tournament. She even won gold in all four event finals: hoop, ball, clubs, and ribbon! Later, she won a silver medal at the 2015 Dundee International Tournament.

2016: More Medals

In 2016, Arina won a bronze medal in the all-around at the 2016 Grand Prix Moscow. She also won a gold medal in ribbon. At the 2016 Lisboa World Cup, she finished 5th in the all-around. She won a silver medal in ribbon there. Arina also won a silver medal at the Bucharest Grand Prix. She finished the year by winning a bronze medal at the 2016 Grand Prix Final in Israel.

2017: World Championships Success

The year 2017 was very successful for Arina. She won a bronze medal at the 2017 Grand Prix Moscow. At the 2017 Baku World Cup, she won her first all-around gold medal. She also won gold in hoop and silver in ball and ribbon.

At the 2017 European Championships in Hungary, Arina was part of the Russian team that won gold. She also won gold medals in ball and clubs. At the 2017 World Games in Poland, Arina won three gold medals in hoop, ball, and ribbon, plus a bronze in clubs.

At the 2017 World Championships in Italy, Arina won gold medals in ball and ribbon. She also won a silver medal in hoop and a bronze in clubs. In the individual all-around finals, she won the silver medal, right behind her twin sister Dina.

2018: European Champion

In 2018, Arina started the season by winning a silver medal at the 2018 Grand Prix Moscow. She later won gold with hoop and clubs at the 2018 Guadalajara World Challenge Cup. At the European Championships, Arina won the all-around gold medal.

2019: Another World Silver

In 2019, Arina won silver in the all-around at the Grand Prix in Moscow. At the 2019 European Championships, she won gold medals in ball and clubs. She also helped the team win gold.

Arina became the absolute champion of Russia for the first time at the 2019 Russian Championship. She scored very high marks. This win helped her and Dina get tickets to the 2019 World Championship in Baku. At the World Championship, Arina won the all-around silver medal, again behind her sister Dina. She also won silver in the ball final and team gold.

2020: More Victories

In 2020, Arina became the absolute champion in the individual standings at the Russian Championship. She also won the all-around and four gold medals at the Grand Prix in Tartu, Estonia. The rest of the 2020 season was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic.

2021: Olympic Challenge

Arina competed in World Cups in Tashkent and Pesaro before the Olympics. She won gold medals in ball and clubs in Tashkent. In Pesaro, she won gold in ribbon and clubs, and silver in the all-around. At the European Championships in June, Arina won the all-around gold medal.

At the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Arina made it to the rhythmic gymnastics individual all-around final. She finished fourth. This was the first time since 1996 that a Russian rhythmic gymnast did not win gold at the Olympics. After the Olympics, Arina competed at the World Championships in Kitakyushu. She won silver in ball and team gold.

2022: Competing at Home

After February 2022, the FIG stopped Russian and Belarusian gymnasts from competing internationally. Because of this, Arina could only compete in events within Russia.

2024: Retirement

On February 23, 2024, Arina Averina announced that she was ending her sports career. She was 25 years old. Her sister Dina also retired at the same time.

Gymnastics Style

Arina Averina is known for her amazing pivot turns. She is also very good at handling the gymnastics equipment, like the ball, hoop, clubs, and ribbon. She can do very difficult turns, like a quadruple ring pivot.
