The Assembly of First Nations Quebec-Labrador (AFNQL) is an important group that speaks for the First Nations people in Quebec and Labrador. Think of it like a student council, but for entire nations!
This organization talks to the government of Quebec and the Canadian government on behalf of these communities. They work to make sure the voices of First Nations are heard.
The AFNQL includes representatives from 43 different communities. These communities belong to many different nations, such as the Abenaki, Algonquin, Atikamekw, Cree, Maliseet, Mi'kmaq, Innu, Huron-Wendat, Naskapi, and Mohawks.
It's important to know that the AFNQL does not represent the Inuit people. The Inuit have their own organization called Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami that speaks for them.
The Assembly holds meetings about four times a year. During these meetings, they decide on important tasks and plans for their leaders and special committees.
From 1985 to 1992, Konrad Sioui was the elected chief of the Assembly. Since 1992, Ghislain Picard has been the chief.
The AFNQL is connected to a larger group called the Assembly of First Nations (AFN), which is based in Ottawa. The chief of the AFNQL is part of the AFN's leadership team. This means they can help lead discussions on big topics like education, health, or money matters for all First Nations across Canada.
