Astronomer Royal facts for kids
The Astronomer Royal is a very important job in the Royal Household of the King or Queen of the United Kingdom. It's a bit like being the official astronomer for the country! There are actually two people who hold this title: the main Astronomer Royal, a position that started way back on June 22, 1675, and the Astronomer Royal for Scotland, which began in 1834.
King Charles II created this role. He also founded the Royal Observatory Greenwich in 1675. He told the first Astronomer Royal, John Flamsteed, to work very carefully. Flamsteed's main job was to fix the tables that showed how planets moved. He also had to map the positions of fixed stars. This was super important for finding the exact location of ships at sea, which helped a lot with navigation.
From 1675 until 1972, the Astronomer Royal was also the boss of the Royal Observatory Greenwich. This person gets a small payment of £100 a year. They are part of the Royal Household, which is overseen by the Lord Chamberlain. After 1972, the job became more of an honorary title. This means it's a very respected position, but it doesn't involve running the observatory anymore. The Astronomer Royal still advises the King or Queen on space and science topics.
