Bangladesh has been part of the Summer Olympic Games since 1984. However, athletes from Bangladesh have never competed in the Winter Olympics. Before 1947, Bangladesh was part of British India. Later, it competed as part of Pakistan until 1971. As of 2024, no athlete representing Bangladesh has won an Olympic medal.
In 2016, Siddikur Rahman made history. He became the first Bangladeshi athlete to earn a spot in the Olympic games for golf. That year, Bangladesh sent seven athletes, which was their largest team ever. Other athletes from Bangladesh have joined the Games through a special way called the wildcard process. This means they get a special invitation to compete. With about 170 million people, Bangladesh is the country with the most people that has not yet won an Olympic medal.
In 2008, the head of the Bangladesh Olympic Association, Wali Ullah, shared some reasons for these results. He mentioned that economic challenges and other difficulties have made it hard to develop sports in the country.
