 Independent Olympic Participants

India first joined the Olympic Games in 1900. This made India the first country from Asia to take part! A single athlete, Norman Pritchard, represented India. He won two silver medals in athletics.

India sent its first team to the Summer Olympic Games in 1920. Since then, India has been part of every Summer Games. India also started competing in the Winter Olympic Games in 1964.

Indian athletes have won 41 medals so far, all at the Summer Games. For many years, the Indian Men's Field Hockey Team was super strong in the Olympics. They won eleven medals between 1928 and 1980. This included eight gold medals, with six of them won in a row from 1928 to 1956! India had its best performance ever at the 2020 Games. They won seven medals, including one gold and two silver medals.

India's Olympic Journey

Early Days Before Independence

India's first time at the Olympics was in 1900. Back then, India was part of British India. As mentioned, it was the first Asian country to join the Games. Norman Pritchard was the only athlete from India. He won two silver medals in athletics. India ranked 19th in medals that year, which is still its best rank ever!

India did not compete in the next three Summer Olympics. Then, in 1920, a businessman named Dorabji Tata helped India get a spot on the International Olympic Committee. This allowed India to compete on its own at the 1920 Summer Olympics. India sent six athletes, including four runners and two wrestlers.

The Indian Olympic movement grew in the 1920s. In 1927, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) was officially recognized. This group helps develop sports in India and picks teams for the Olympics. For the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, India sent eight athletes. The Indian Hockey Federation also sent the men's hockey team. This team won India's first ever Olympic gold medal in Amsterdam! It was also the first gold medal won by any Asian country in the modern Olympics.

The Indian hockey team continued its winning streak. They won three gold medals in a row from 1928 to 1936. In 1932, they beat the United States 24–1, which is the biggest win in Olympic history! In the 1936 final, they beat Germany 8–1.

After India Became Independent

India became an independent country in 1947. It sent its first team as an independent nation to the 1948 Summer Olympics in London. India sent 79 athletes who competed in ten sports. This included India's first time in arts, boxing, cycling, football, and water polo. The Indian field hockey team won the only medal, a gold. This was India's first medal as an independent country.

The 1952 Summer Olympics were special because India sent women competitors for the first time. The team had 64 athletes, including four women. Wrestler K. D. Jadhav won a bronze medal. This was the first individual medal for independent India. The Indian field hockey team won its sixth straight gold medal in 1956. In the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome, the hockey team won a silver medal after losing to Pakistan. This was their first loss in the Olympics since 1928.

India first competed in the Winter Olympics in 1964 in Innsbruck. Jeremy Bujakowski competed in alpine skiing. Later that year, at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, the men's field hockey team won another gold medal. This was India's only medal at those Games.

Paes US16 (11) (29569576630)
Leander Paes won a bronze medal in 1996. This was India's first Olympic medal in almost 16 years.

India sent its smallest team since independence to the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. India did not compete in the Winter Olympics from 1972 to 1984. In the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, the men's field hockey team won a bronze medal. In 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, India did not win any medals. This was the first time since 1924.

At the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, the men's hockey team won their eighth Olympic gold medal. This was their last gold medal in hockey at the Olympics. India did not win any medals in the next three Summer Olympics (1984, 1988, 1992). India returned to the Winter Olympics in 1988. The team included the first Indian woman participant, Shailaja Kumar. In 1996, tennis player Leander Paes won a bronze medal. This was India's first Olympic medal in almost 16 years! He was also the first Indian individual medalist since 1952.

For the 2016 Summer Olympics, India sent over 100 athletes for the first time. India won two medals: one silver and one bronze. Shuttler P. V.
