Bomba on the Big Screen
Between 1949 and 1955, a series of 12 adventure movies about Bomba were made. These movies were set in the African jungle. They used characters and ideas from the books. The first movie was Bomba, the Jungle Boy. The last one was Lord of the Jungle.
Monogram Pictures released these movies. After 1953, the company became Allied Artists Pictures. All the movies were directed by Ford Beebe. Johnny Sheffield starred as Bomba. Smoki Whitfield also appeared in many of the films.
First Bomba Movie
- Bomba, the Jungle Boy
This was the first Bomba movie with Johnny Sheffield. It came out on March 20, 1949. The movie also featured Peggy Ann Garner and Onslow Stevens. Smoki Whitfield played a native guide named Eli. In this film, Bomba helps a young girl lost in the jungle. It is 70 minutes long.

- Bomba on Panther Island
This second movie is about Bomba facing a dangerous panther. This happens during a brush fire. Allene Roberts and Harry Lewis also starred. Smoki Whitfield returned as Eli. It was released on December 18, 1949, and runs for 70 minutes.
- The Lost Volcano
Released on June 25, 1950, this movie shows two bad guys looking for gold. They kidnap a little boy. Marjorie Lord, Donald Woods, and Tommy Ivo were in this film. It is 76 minutes long.
- Bomba and the Hidden City
Also known as The Hidden City, this movie came out on September 24, 1950. Bomba tries to get a stolen throne back to its rightful owner. Sue England and Paul Guilfoyle starred. Whitfield played Hadji. The movie is 71 minutes long.
- The Lion Hunters
Sometimes called Bomba and the Lion Hunters, this film was released on March 25, 1951. Bomba tries to save lions from hunters who want to catch them for zoos. Woody Strode and Morris Ankrum were in it. Whitfield played Jonas. It runs for 75 minutes.
- Elephant Stampede
This movie, sometimes called Bomba and the Elephant Stampede, came out on October 28, 1951. Two elephant hunters plan to steal ivory. Bomba calls on friendly elephants to stop them. Edith Evanson, John Kellogg, and Myron Healey starred. It is 71 minutes long.
- African Treasure
Released in 1952, this movie is also known as Bomba and the African Treasure. Bomba catches two diamond smugglers. Laurette Luez, Lyle Talbot, and Martin Garralaga were in it. Whitfield appeared as Eli. It runs for 70 minutes.
- Bomba and the Jungle Girl
Also known as Jungle Girl, this movie was released on December 7, 1952. Bomba searches for the graves of his parents. Karen Sharpe and Walter Sande starred. It is 70 minutes long.
- Safari Drums
This movie, sometimes called Bomba and the Safari Drums, came out on June 21, 1953. Bomba solves the death of a geologist who was killed during a movie shoot. Barbara Bestar and Emory Parnell starred. Whitfield played native guide Eli. It is 71 minutes long.
- The Golden Idol
Released on January 10, 1954, this story is about a bad Arab chieftain. He steals a golden idol from an African tribe. Paul Guilfoyle starred, and Whitfield played native guide Eli. It is 71 minutes long.
- Killer Leopard
Sometimes called Bomba and the Killer Leopard, this movie was released on August 22, 1954. Bomba searches for a man lost in the jungle. He also hunts a leopard that is attacking people. Beverly Garland starred. Whitfield returned as Eli. It runs for 70 minutes.
- Lord of the Jungle
This was the twelfth and final Bomba movie starring Johnny Sheffield. It was released on June 12, 1955. It was also Sheffield's last movie before he retired from acting to go to college. Wayne Morris and Nancy Hale starred. Whitfield appeared again as Eli. The story is about Bomba saving a herd of elephants. It is 69 minutes long.
